The Essential Campus Workers Thank You Act
The Student Senate recently passed a resolution thanking our essential campus employees that have and continue to help keep campus running and accessible for students through the COVID-19 pandemic. The resolution also publicly reaffirms Student Government's commitment to practicing safe measures to stop the spread of COVID-19, and calls on the student body to do the same.
Preventative Maintenance
The Utility Distribution shop checks on steam manholes as part of the preventative maintenance process. Part of these checks is to ensure that the sump pumps in the manholes are functioning properly to keep water from building up as well as verifying that there are no leaks and all steam traps are functioning properly. These are just some of the checks that the shop performs to keep our steam system functioning safely.
Coin For Exceptional Service Award
Heather Cashwell of Waste Reduction & Recycling, received a Facilities Coin for exceptional service for her great work with the Reopen Group and her effort in shepherding the start of the compost site. With Heather's involvement, the compost site grew faster than expected and even has seen its first expansion. Andy Snead, Senior Director of Facilities Services, praised her saying, "She oversees great partnerships with faculty, staff and students. I view her as someone with great perspective, and is always willing to chip in and help get things done."
Collaboration Creates Energy Record
Last year as NC State adjusted the academic calendar due to COVID-19, a unique campus energy conservation opportunity emerged. The fall semester would end before Thanksgiving, and the spring semester didn’t start until mid-January. Employees in NC State Energy Management began considering if that nearly 8-week break could be maximized for energy cost avoidance. The plan worked and, in collaboration with campus and Building Maintenance and Operations, NC State achieved record-setting energy cost avoidance. The university avoided $389,000 in energy costs from Dec. 24 to Jan. 3, which is the typical winter break. The extra setback efforts from Nov. 25 to Dec. 23 and from Jan. 4 to Jan. 18 collectively generated an additional $485,000 in avoided energy costs. Learn more here.
