City Manager Search Survey
The current City Manager is retiring at the end of this June, and the City Council is interested in getting community feedback on the search and hiring process. Among other forms of feedback, there is an online survey in English, Spanish, French, and Amharic. I encourage you to take a few moments to share your views on this survey and/or email me.
Completed Public Artwork at BY Morrison & Sidewalk Poetry Contest
The new public art project at B.Y. Morrison Park has been completed. Mural artist Chris Pyrate has painted a chalkboard mural where kids and adults can express their creativity. There are mailboxes next to the mural with chalk and erasers. All of the tables in the park have been painted with colorful designs, and City employees stenciled children's games on the concrete. There is more info and photos here.
The Arts and Humanities Division also is seeking short original poems from Takoma Park residents for a sidewalk poetry contest. Find out more and use the online form to submit. The contest deadline is Feb. 28. After the winners are selected, the City will stamp poems in new sidewalks or sidewalks that are being repaired.
Circle Woods/Poplar Ave Stream Improvements
The City of Takoma Park recently did some work in the Circle Ave stream location near Poplar and New Hampshire Ave. As you may recall, there is a long-term project of restoration for this location. Recently, Public Works installed 250-300 live stakes that were planted along the banks of the stream to help with erosion and hopefully outcompete some of the invasive plants growing in the area.
The stakes are a mix of five native shrubs that occur naturally near water margins and are all ecologically beneficial, providing a food source and shelter for wildlife. They include: Black Elderberry (Sambucus canadensis), Silky Willow (Salix sericea), Red Twig Dogwood (Cornus sericea), Silky Dogwood (Cornus amomum), and Buttonbush (Cephalanthus occidentalis).
Black History Month Arts Events
A new Vintage Movie Night will celebrate Black History Month and the accomplishments of Black musicians and artists spanning half a century. The YouTube premiere will be this Thursday, Feb. 25, at 8pm and will also be available afterwards for viewing. See the Facebook event for more details.
The City is also planning a live online poetry reading on Thursday, March 18, called This Is What America Looks Like. It will feature seven of the 100 DC-area poets whose work is included in a new anthology of poetry and fiction with the same name. More details to come soon.
