Celebrating Women’s History Month

It’s that time of year again! The time where women are intentionally and purposely given all of our flowers. Since 1995, each President has made March Women’s History Month and we are, and will always be, here for it all.

We have come a long way and we have a longer way to go, but let’s take a moment to recognize the strides over the past couple of years. In 2016, First Lady Michelle Obama delivered a very moving response to Donald’s Trump's derogatory comments about OUR body. She spoke on rape culture and gave a voice to those that may have been silenced by him at that time. The female body continues to be talked about by those that do not live in one, but we take control everyday of what is ours and sit, stand and walk in that power. It was also in 2016 that California Attorney General Kamala Harris made history as the first Indian-American woman elected to the Senate - and look at her now!

Although the minority right has tried their best to control women’s bodies, we have spoken and demanded that WE as women are the only ones that have a say in what happens to and for our bodies. In his first 30 days, President Biden has chosen to protect our health and our rights, and we applaud him for that! We did it Joe!

And while we celebrate all that is Woman in March and the resilience of our gender, we cannot allow our resilience to downplay our continued resistance.

Coming off of a successful Black History Month, Onyx’s team made sure that we were even more intentional with our work and outreach for the month, launching our newest partnership with Ethel’s Club, participating in educational panels for HBCUs, and continuing to ensure that our Black and Brown brothers and sisters have access to the proper mental health services they may need.

POWERFUL BLACK WOMEN TO PAY ATTENTION TO…

“We are the Women who lighten the darkness”

Every year, the National Women’s History Alliance selects a yearly theme for Women’s History Month. This year, the theme captures the spirit of these challenging times that we are triumphantly living through, and embraces the theme of "Valiant Women of the Vote: Refusing to Be Silenced.”

This theme comes RIGHT on time for us as Black women because we have always, and will always, be here to stay. We have trailblazers living amongst us and it is a beautiful sight to see.

We have always fought for our seat at the table and in 2021 we understand that the table is there for the taking, and is rightfully ours.

To celebrate this year’s theme, and WHM, we’ve highlighted a few of our favorite Black women whose actions and words have been reflective of our times, and provided inspiration and power to the Black community.

Stacey Abrams, politician and voting rights activist, literally rallied the troops in Georgia to help us reach the political promiseland during election season.

Patrisse Cullors-Brignac stood tall organizing the Black Lives Matter movement, allowing our voices to be heard as we stomped the pavement to fight for justice and racial equity.

Ashley Etienne, Kamala Harris’ Chief Communications Director made sure our Madame VP spoke on OUR behalf and listened to the concerns, while hearing what we have to say.

And last but not least, a young woman who is undoubtedly the future - Amanda C. Gorman. If you hadn’t heard of her pre-inauguration, you now know that she has that swagger in the shape of a pen. She allows her words to give life so eloquently that she has quickly become the new voice for women, young and old. She was even blessed to be interviewed by our forever First Lady Michelle Obama!
