Midweek Lenten Service

AS WE GATHER
As we journey through this Lenten season and the days of Holy Week, we encounter Jesus acting in a way that is somewhat unfamiliar to us: He is angry and forceful, clearing the temple of all those who have turned His Father’s house into a den of robbers. We would do well to consider if God’s house in our own church is what Jesus desires: a house of prayer for all nations.

INVOCATION
Leader:  In the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit
People:            Amen.

OPENING VERSICLES FOR LENT
Leader:  This is the day which the Lord has made;
People:            let us rejoice and be glad in it.
Leader:  From the rising of the sun to its setting,
People:            the name of the Lord is to be praised.

Leader:  Return to the Lord, your God, for He is gracious and merciful,
People:            slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love, and repents of evil.
Leader:  Jesus said: If any man would come after Me,
People:            let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow Me.
Leader:  Christ was wounded for our transgressions.
People:            He was bruised for our iniquities.

Leader:  From the rising of the sun to its setting,
People:            the name of the Lord is to be praised.

ALL:     Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen.

CONFESSION OF SINS
Exhortation
Leader:  Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another.

Confession of Sins
Leader:  Holy and gracious God,
People:            I confess that I have sinned against You this day. Some of my sin I know—the thoughts and words and deed of which I am ashamed—but some is known only to You. In the name of Jesus Christ I ask forgiveness. Deliver and restore me that I may rest in peace.
Leader:  By the mercy of God we are redeemed by Jesus Christ, and in Him we are forgiven.  We rest now in His peace and rise in the morning to serve Him.
People:            Amen.

PSALM       Psalm 51:1–13          (Spoken Responsively)
1Have mercy on me, O God,
according to your | steadfast love;*
according to your abundant mercy
blot out my trans- | gressions.

2Wash me thoroughly from my in- | iquity,*
and cleanse me | from my sin!
3For I know my trans- | gressions,*
and my sin is ever be- | fore me.
4Against you, you only, have I sinned
and done what is evil | in your sight,*
so that you may be justified in your words
and blameless in your | judgment.

5Behold, I was brought forth in in- | iquity,*
and in sin did my mother con- | ceive me.
6Behold, you delight in truth in the inward | being,*
and you teach me wisdom in the | secret heart.
7Purge me with hyssop, and I | shall be clean;*
wash me, and I shall be whit- | er than snow.
8Let me hear joy and | gladness;*
let the bones that you have bro- | ken rejoice.
9Hide your face | from my sins,*
and blot out all my in- | iquities.
10Create in me a clean heart, | O God,*
and renew a right spirit with- | in me.
11Cast me not away from your | presence,*
and take not your Holy Spirit | from me.
12Restore to me the joy of your sal- | vation,*
and uphold me with a willing | spirit.
13Then I will teach transgressors | your ways,*
and sinners will re- | turn to you.

X READINGS X
FIRST READING     Isaiah 56:1–8    (The house of the Lord is for all nations and peoples.)
1Thus says the Lord:
“Keep justice, and do righteousness,
for soon my salvation will come,
and my deliverance be revealed.
2Blessed is the man who does this,
and the son of man who holds it fast,
who keeps the Sabbath, not profaning it,
and keeps his hand from doing any evil.”
3Let not the foreigner who has joined himself to the Lord say,
“The Lord will surely separate me from his people”;
and let not the eunuch say,
“Behold, I am a dry tree.”
4For thus says the Lord:
“To the eunuchs who keep my Sabbaths,
who choose the things that please me
and hold fast my covenant,
5I will give in my house and within my walls
a monument and a name
better than sons and daughters;
I will give them an everlasting name
that shall not be cut off.
6“And the foreigners who join themselves to the Lord,
to minister to him, to love the name of the Lord,
and to be his servants,
everyone who keeps the Sabbath and does not profane it,
and holds fast my covenant—
7these I will bring to my holy mountain,
and make them joyful in my house of prayer;
their burnt offerings and their sacrifices
will be accepted on my altar;
for my house shall be called a house of prayer
for all peoples.”
8The Lord God,
who gathers the outcasts of Israel, declares,
“I will gather yet others to him
besides those already gathered.”

Lector:  O Lord, have mercy on us.
People:            Thanks be to God.

SECOND READING     1 Peter 1:13–21    (Ransomed by the precious blood of Christ, we are called to act in holiness.
13Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. 14As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, 15but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, 16since it is written, “You shall be holy, for I am holy.” 17And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one’s deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, 18knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, 19but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. 20He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for your sake, 21who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.

Lector:  O Lord, have mercy on us.
People:            Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL READING     Mark 11:15–19    (Jesus cleanses the temple.)
15And they came to Jerusalem. And he entered the temple and began to drive out those who sold and those who bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons. 16And he would not allow anyone to carry anything through the temple. 17And he was teaching them and saying to them, “Is it not written, ‘My house shall be called a house of prayer for all the nations’? But you have made it a den of robbers.” 18And the chief priests and the scribes heard it and were seeking a way to destroy him, for they feared him, because all the crowd was astonished at his teaching. 19And when evening came they went out of the city.

Lector:  O Lord, have mercy on us.

People:            Thanks be to God.

RESPONSORY
Leader:  Into Your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit.
People:            Into Your hands I commend my spirit.
Leader:  You have redeemed me, O Lord, God of truth.
People:            Into Your hands I commend my spirit.
Leader:  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit.
People:            Into Your hands I commend my spirit.

SPECIAL HYMN     “And Can It Be, That I Should Gain”    Sung by Andy Dramstad

MESSAGE

PRAYERS
Versicles
Leader:  Hear my prayer, O Lord;
People:            listen to my cry.
Leader:  Keep me as the apple of Your eye;
People:            hide me in the shadow of Your wings.
Leader:  In righteousness I shall see You;
People:            when I awake Your presence will give me joy.

Leader:  Be present, merciful God, and protect us through the hours of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of life may find our rest in You; through Jesus Christ, our Lord.
People:            Amen.

Leader:  Be our light in the darkness, O Lord, and in Your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of Your only Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord.
People:            Amen.

LORD'S PRAYER
Leader:  Taught by our Lord and trusting His promises, we are bold to pray:
Our Father who art in heaven,
     hallowed be thy name,
     Thy kingdom come,
     Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;
     give us this day our daily bread;
     and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;
     and lead us not into temptation,
     but deliver us from evil.
For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

NUNC DIMITTIS
Leader:  Guide us waking, O Lord,
and guard us sleeping
that awake we may watch with Christ
and asleep we may rest in peace.
People:            Lord, now You let Your servant go in peace;
Your word has been fulfilled.
My own eyes have seen the salvation
which you have prepared in the sight of ev'ry people:
a light to reveal You to the nations
and the glory of Your people Israel.
Glory be to the Father and to the Son
and to the Holy Spirit;
as it was in the beginning, is now,
and will be forever.  Amen.
Guide us waking, O Lord,
and guard us sleeping
that awake we may watch with Christ
and asleep we may rest in peace.

BENEDICTION
Leader:  The almighty and merciful Lord, the Father, the + Son, and the Holy Spirit, bless you and keep you.
People:            Amen.

CLOSING HYMN     “Abide with Me”    LSB 878
1).  Abide with me, fast falls the eventide.
The darkness deepens; Lord, with me abide.
When other helpers fail and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, O abide with me.

2).  I need Thy presence ev’ry passing hour;
What but Thy grace can foil the tempter’s pow’r?
Who like Thyself my guide and stay can be?
Through cloud and sunshine, O abide with me.

3).  Come not in terrors, as the King of kings,
But kind and good, with healing in Thy wings;
Tears for all woes, a heart for ev’ry plea.
Come, Friend of sinners, thus abide with me.

4).  Swift to its close ebbs out life’s little day;
Earth’s joys grow dim, its glories pass away;
Change and decay in all around I see;
O Thou who changest not, abide with me.
