EFAITH MEETINGS AND ACTIVITIES POSTPONED
Due to COVID-19 all our meetings in 2020 and the first half of this year have been cancelled . The annual weekend and the 3rd mining heritage meeting have been moved to 2022, but we explore the possibility to organise a meeting on rail heritage in Brussels at the end of November.
However, EFAITH will be present at the European industrial tourism fair ‘B-Industrial’ in Barcelona, 11-13 June

European Year of Rail 2021

The European Commission and Parliament declared 2021 the European Year of Rail. Their aim is to promote rail transport as part of the Green Deal.
The year 2021 was chosen because it is exactly 175 years ago that a steam train connected two European capitals, Brussels and Paris, for the first time. However, the past and heritage of the railways are not immediately the focus of this theme year. Gradually, however, the heritage of railways and tramways is put on the rails.
EFAITH has been working hard on this since last year.
On our website we collect data on the importance of railway heritage.
Endangered rail heritage
Last year we also launched a campaign to help save endangered railway heritage. Anyone interested can do his or her bit - e.g. by sending a letter to local officials urging them to save their heritage.

Since April we are building a new website railheritage.eu
This website consists of four databases
- 1) who's who - a list of organisations involved in the preservation and mise en valeur of railway heritage in Europe - to encourage networking
- 2) a list of good examples of conservation and reafforestation of railway heritage (both buildings and infrastructure and lines)
- 3) a list of activities that will be organised, i.e. a calendar
- 4) a series of news items and press releases.
In addition, we also want to build a number of pages devoted to the influence of the railways on art and culture.
The website is now under development and you can lend a hand by filling in and returning the questionnaires that can be downloaded from the webpages
EFAITH virtual meetings on saving the European rail heritage
Each month EFAITH will hold a virtual meeting on the saving of rail heritage. The second meeting is going to take place on June 7th, a third one on July 5th . The programme of the second meeting is now available online. You can register for free.

FRANCE
Calais and its lace heritage
Calais was one of the main European centres for the production of mechanical lace. The prestigious 'Cité Dentelle et de la Mode de Calais' is housed in a reused and restored lace factory.
But there are many other empty factories in Calais today. The City Council has just ordered an inventory and evaluation of the empty buildings in order to examine the possibility of their re-use
Young people and industrial heritage
The pupils of the 4th grade classes in Montchanin are working on the industrial heritage of the 19th century.
After working on documents from the departmental archives, they went out into the field: Montchanin, the Blanzy mines or Villa Perrusson and the working-class district of Ecuisses, depending on the class, and immersed themselves in the places. They took notes, photos and filmed some views.
Back at school, in each class, one group will make an animated video to tell a story (boss-worker relations) based on old postcards, the second will produce an interactive tourist guide with period documents, photos, soundtracks, etc.

GERMANY
Brandenburg shows its rich industrial culture.
On 4 June, the Brandenburg State of Culture opened its theme year 2021 in the Borsighalle in Eberswalde. The motto is "Future of the past - industrial culture on the move".
Between 1847 and 1849, the Borsighalle was built on the site of the former iron-splitting works. It is considered the prototype of a column-free, variable construction
The aim is to look into history, but also into the present and the future, with over 40 projects on the sites of production. “No future without origins", as Minister of Culture Manja Schüle put it at the press conference.
32 million euros for a quantum leap in Völklingen world cultural heritage
Extensive construction and design measures will permanently and programmatically change the appearance of the Völklingen Ironworks by 2025
The Wasserhochbehälter (elevated water tank) will become the central entrance platform, Power Station I a unique summer stage, and the greening of the visitors' car park: this is what the reality of the World Cultural Heritage Site at the Völklingen Ironworks will look like in a few years, if everything goes according to plan.

PORTUGAL
Today, many tourist regions are discovering industrial tourism as a valuable addition to their traditional offerings - even outside the normal tourist season.
The Algarve Tourism Board (Turismo do Algarve), as a member of the Steering Group of the Portuguese Industrial Tourism Network (Grupo Dinamizador da Rede Portuguesa de Turismo Industrial), makes clear the potentials of this segment in the region and how to transform it into tourism product. Industrial tourism can diversify local offer, boost the interior (rural areas or low density territories) in order to attract tourists throughout the year.
Due to its characteristics, industrial tourism will allow enhance and develop the Algarve region, while at the same time enriching the experience of those who visit.

SPAIN
The gas factory at Oviedo
A campaign to save the last gas factory building says "Oviedo cannot afford to continue destroying its heritage". The former industrial complex was earmarked for demolition, which has now been halted by the Principality pending agreement between the City Council and the owner, EDP, on the sale of the site.

UNITED KINGDOM
Two water towers building of the month
The association Save Britain’s Heritage selected the Rockwell Green Water Towers in Somerset as Building of the Month May 2021.
The older brick tower is dating from 1885. It has been designated by Historic England as a Grade II listed building. The neighbouring unlisted water tower is a circular four-storey concrete Art Deco style construction dating from 1934.
They were decommissioned around 2009 and sold at auction in 2013 to a developer who suggested at least one tower would be converted into a house. This plan has not progressed and the towers have remained vacant and increasingly at risk from neglect.

CEMENT FACTORIES
