Cooper International keeps the number one spot in the PEC 6 with win over Balboa School

The Pec 6 conference, one of the only conferences cleared for play in California, continued action this weekend in San Diego. Cooper International Academy faced Balboa (1-2) in the first game of the day. Led by guard Gabriel Gonzales with 11 points in the first half and sharp shooting by point guard Andrew Palacios with 7 points, Cooper battled against a consistently strong shooting Balboa team. Cooper would enter into halftime neck and neck with a 31 to 29 lead.

In the second, both teams came out aggressive on defense, pressuring and causing multiple turnovers. Balboa capitalized with a 7 point lead. Cooper clamped down on defense, keeping Balboa limited from the field while 6’11” center Alex Tew dominated the boards and inside to give Cooper the momentum they needed to tie the game. Tony Corley gave Cooper International the extra boost needed, finishing nearly perfect from the field (5-6) for a total of 12 points. Dondre Bausley, 6’3” combo guard hit a timely 3 pointer to put Cooper up by 3 with a minute left to play. A big team defensive effort and smart time management would seal the deal as Cooper defeated Balboa 64 to 61.

Cooper rolls past Taylor Made

After a tough loss two weeks ago against Arizona’s Taylor Made Prep, Cooper International bounced back. After a 5-0 start for Cooper, Taylor Made responded with a 10-2 run. Cooper answered with an aggressive half court trap that resulted in rushed shots and turnovers by Taylor Made. Dondre Bausley, 6’3” combo guard, would help lead Cooper International with 7 points in the first half. Alex Tew chipped in 8 points in the first half and Cooper went into halftime up 28-16.

Cooper’s defensive intensity carried over into the 2nd half limiting Taylor Made to just 2 points in the first 4 minutes. On the offensive end, an array of players contributed to 12 quick points. Alex Tew would continue to dominate, adding 9 additional points in the 2nd half to finish with 17 points and 9 rebounds. Gabriel Gonzales did a little of everything, scoring 7 points, grabbing 6 boards, and dishing out 7 assists including a no-look backwards pass to Alex Tew for the slam. Tony Corley added 12 points and 11 rebounds as Cooper closed out the game 68-47, sending Taylor Made to 0-2 this week.

Cooper closes out Middlebrook Academy, Finishing 3-0.

In the last matchup of the weekend, Cooper found themselves against a strong guard-dominated Middlebrook squad. Cooper International started off strong once again taking an early 20-10 lead. Pushing the tempo, Middlebrook clawed back with a 9-2 run closing the gap to 3. Andrew Palacios, led all scorers with 13 points in the first half, and Cooper went into halftime with a small lead 48-22.

Cooper International is establishing itself as a second hand team. Spurred by Tony Corley’s 16 points and 5 rebounds and Alex Tew’s 12 points and 13 rebounds, Cooper would take a demanding lead in the first 10 minutes. Gabriel Gonzales who did not see playing time in the first half for personal reasons, would add 10 points and 3 assists in limited minutes. Rudy Brown Jr. sparked the team with 9 points and 5 rebounds and Dondre Bausley consistency proved a difference maker with 12 points, 4 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Andrew Palacios would finish with 22 points, 4 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 blocks as Cooper defeated Middlebrook 97-80.
