Community Arts Partnership is proud to announce:

The Seamus Heaney Awards for New Writing 2021
LONGLIST

In these challenging times, Community Arts Partnership recognises the creative achievement of all the poets who submitted their poems for the CAP anthology and the Seamus Heaney Award for New Writing 2021.

We are delighted to announce the longlist for the Seamus Heaney Award for New Writing 2021:

  • Frost - Judith Thurley
  • Health and Safety - Jim McElroy
  • Irish Hare - Margaret A. Sands
  • Killunaught - Máirín Uí Cheallaigh
  • Olga Draws the World - Jim McElroy
  • Out of Our Depths - Teresa Kane
  • Retting the Linen - Glen Wilson
  • Sheep Carcass - Jim McElroy
  • The Goldfinch - Sue Steging
  • The Swans - Charlene O'Donnell
  • What’s Left - Colin Hassard

Supported by our principal funder, The Arts Council of Northern Ireland, and carrying the generous and continued endorsement of the Heaney Family, the Seamus Heaney Award for New Writing 2021 award offers immense recognition and opportunity to those whose work is under consideration for the title. After a full day’s deliberation by our panel of judges, following weeks of consideration of all submissions individually, all agree that these poems are worthy of further consideration for shortlisting and indeed, ultimately, winning this year’s Seamus Heaney Award.

The poets featured in the longlist will be contacted separately and asked to submit a video of themselves reading their longlisted poems. These poems and the results of the Seamus Heaney Award for New Writing will be broadcast on Sunday 28th of March at 3.00 pm. Community Arts Partnership’s latest poetry anthology for 2021, ‘Heartland’, will be launched at this event. A link to the event will be provided on the CAP website in the second week of March.

This is the seventh occasion on which the Seamus Heaney Award for New Writing will be presented, and is the 20th year in which our organisation publishes an anthology of poetry, celebrating the contributions of poets from right across Northern Ireland.

Congratulations to all those whose submitted work will be published in this year’s anthology, especially to poets* chosen for the longlist!
