#HAPC21 in Review
This year’s annual assembly of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (AAHPM) was held virtually February 17th-19th. Below are highlights from this year’s conference:
Robert Smeltz, MA, RN-BC, NP-ACHPM has been named a 2021 Hospice & Palliative Nurses Association (HPNA) Fellow in Palliative Care Nursing. The designation is bestowed upon HPNA members who have made significant contributions to HPNA, HPCC, and/or HPNF, while also impacting the field of palliative nursing. Since joining the Bellevue Palliative Care team in 2007, Rob has exemplified palliative care nursing and become a leader on both a national level and care across the institution. He organizes the continually well-received NYULH annual Palliative Care Interdisciplinary Conference since year (learn more about this year’s conference on Ethical Issues in Serious Illness, to be held virtually 4/27/21, here and is the chair for the New York Health + Hospitals Palliative Care Council and co-chair for the Bellevue Hospital organ donor council. Priya Pinto, MD of NYU-Winthrop was named a fellow of the American Academy of Hospice and Palliative Medicine (FAAHPM) at the 2021 annual conference. This honor is bestowed upon physicians whose professional activity is devoted to the practice of hospice and palliative medicine. Fellows of the Academy are required to be board-certified, members of AAHPM for 7 years, and active within the Academy. Learn more about the FAAHPM designation here. Congratulations, Dr. Pinto!

Arpit Arora, MD, Susan E. Cohen, MD, and Nick Kanellis, BA (Northwestern University) presented poster “Funny Money: Using Behavioral Economics and Improv to Help Achieve Goal-Concordant Patient Care.” (C400)
 
Megan E. Rau, MD, MPH, Annette A. Georgia, MD, Janelle Linton, MPH, Kaylin Milazzo, BCC, MDiv, and Christopher Oates, LCSW presented a scholarly poster “Implementing a Screening Question on Biases and Racism in Inpatient Palliative Care Consults” (SCH845)
Gold Human Honor Society Recipient

Tiffany Lee, MD has been selected to join the Gold Humanism Honor Society—the first NYULH geriatrics fellow to be inducted into the society! Dr. Lee was selected from hundreds of applicants to join the NYU  GHHS chapter to bring the values of the Gold Foundation--"to instill a culture of respect, dignity, and compassion for patients and professionals"--to life at NYU. There will be an induction ceremony in the spring, details will be shared when available. Congratulations, Dr. Lee, on this prestigious and well-deserved distinction!
NYULH Friendly Telephone Calls Program to be Presented at Patient Experience Innovation Showcase

The NYULH Friendly Telephone Calls Program has been selected for presentation at the Patient Experience Innovation Showcase, to be held virtually April 27th from 11am-12pm. The program, led by Nina Blachman, MD with Michael Perskin, MD, Eric Goldberg, MD, Joshua Chodosh, MD, MSHS, Yael Zweig, NP, Maria Amin, and Jasmine Knox, is part of a larger initiative to ensure the best possible care for older patients. Volunteers make weekly calls to hundreds of patients, enhancing their lives, encouraging them to get the medical care they need, and helping volunteers find meaning as well.
Palliative Care Hosts Anthony Back, MD for Communications Workshop

On February 11th, the palliative care fellowship hosted Anthony Back, MD—co-founder of VitalkTalk, a national nonprofit that provides innovative, interactive clinician and faculty development courses to improve communication skills--for a communications workshop of Difficult Family Meetings. Faculty facilitated two scenarios—one with multiple providers and one with multiple family members--for fellows to role-play, then feedback was provided. The successful workshop was part of a communications curriculum that runs throughout the year.
Promotions & Appointments

NYU Langone Health—Long Island Geriatrics faculty member Jeannine Nonaillada, PhD, OTR/L, BCG, FAOTA was promoted to Associate Professor in the first round of promotions at the NYU LI SOM’s Appointments, Promotions, Tenure (APT) committee. Dr. Nonaillada is Assistant Dean of Faculty Development & Mentoring and Director of the Faculty Scholars Program. Congratulations, Dr. Nonaillada!
NYU Langone Health—Long Island Geriatrics faculty member Jesus Lehi Garcia, MD was appointed to the Board of MAGS (Metropolitan Area Geriatrics Society).
Publications & Media

Health Magazine spoke with Joshua Chodosh, MD, MSHS about a new study that reports on dementia as a risk factor for Covid-19. Read the article here.

Also, the HearVA-ED research team, led by Dr. Chodosh, published “The HEAR‐VA Pilot Study: Hearing Assistance Provided to Older Adults in the Emergency Department” in the Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. Read the full article on the pilot here
Angela Xu, MD, Kathy Zhang, MD, Robert Smeltz, MA, RN-BC, NP-ACHPM, and Susan E. Cohen, MD published an article on the Bellevue Palliative Care team’s response to the Covid-19 surge in the Journal of Palliative Medicine. Read it here

Management of Dementia Related Behaviors

The Metropolitan Area Geriatrics Society (MAGS) and the New York chapter of the American College of Physicians (MAGS) will host a webinar on Management of Dementia Related Behaviors, presented by geriatric psychiatrist Alan Steinberg, MD, on Wednesday, March 17th at 7pm. Hearing Health Care Symposium

Researchers from NYULH and SCAN Health Plan, in collaboration with the NYU Aging Incubator and CALTCM, will host a Hearing Health Care Symposium on Thursday, March 18th from 5:15 to 7:15pm ET. The program will feature experts in audiology and geriatrics and address how hearing loss affects communication, health, and healthcare as well as strategies for improving quality of life for older adults with hearing loss. Palliative Care Conference
