Cross-cultural Creation Residency Deadline!

Today, Friday February 26th, is the last day to apply to the Cross Cultural Creation Residency!
This year’s residency will be a return to the roots of creation, bringing ten artists together in Kouchibouguac National Park to create art in a low-technology setting.

The paid residency, which will take place from May 31 to June 9, 2021, is now accepting applications for artists of any discipline who are interested in leaving their high-tech set up behind and spending ten days surrounded by the beauty of New Brunswick’s Acadian Coast.

Ten artists will be selected: three Anglophone artists, three Francophone artists, and three Indigenous artists, as well as one jury’s choice. Artists of all disciplines are welcome to apply as long as their proposed work fits within the limitations of the setting (no ultra high-tech setups that need the internet and multiple plug ins).

The residency is a collaboration between ArtsLink NB, the Association acadienne des artistes professionel.le.s du Nouveau Brunswick (AAAPNB), and Mawi’Art: Wabanaki Artist Collective. Applications are open until midnight Friday, February 26, 2021.

For more information, and to apply, head to our website at www.artslinknb.com, Mawi’Art’s website at https://www.mawiart.org/ or to the aaapnb website at http://www.aaapnb.ca/.

ARTS AND CULTURE HAVE ALWAYS BEEN THERE FOR US. NOW WE NEED TO BE THERE FOR ARTS AND CULTURE.

In challenging times, we rely on our cultural identity and creative communities even more. Indeed, our province’s artists and creators have worked to connect and inspire us throughout the COVID-19 crisis particularly in the early months of lock dow —with virtual performances, exhibitions, and readings, and by offering insight into their creative processes. Like our provincial tourism industry, cultural and
creative sectors are among the most affected by the COVID-19 crisis. Performance art and performing venues have been among the hardest hit. Until we can return to life as we knew it, let’s show our artists and creators the same love and support they offered all of us, at an especially difficult time.

To that end, the department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture is launching a campaign that celebrates our cultural industries—notably art, music, literature, craft, and performing arts— and encourages New Brunswickers to show their support.

SHMF Nel Oudemans Award Increased to $4000

The Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation’s juried Award programs recognise the vital importance of visual art in the cultural fabric of New Brunswick. This year the foundation is proud to announce that it has doubled the value of the Nel Oudemans Award. Established in 2002, as a mark of respect of the many contributions of Strathbutler artist Nel Oudemans, this annual juried award recognizes the pursuit of excellence in the fields of fine craft and design by emerging New Brunswick artisans.  It is intended to support creative growth of artists in the early stages of their careers.

In conjunction with the $4,000 award, the recipient of the Nel Oudemans Award is eligible for additional funding to support an approved educational conference.  2021 application regulations and deadline (June 1, 2021) can be found at:

THE UNB ART CENTRE CELEBRATES INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Over the course of this past year, the UNB Art Centre has been mining its collection for its hidden gems and finding a way to bring these works to light without the walls of traditional art gallery spaces. The UNB Art Centre embarked upon Revelations from the UNB Permanent Collection in response to the COVD-19 lockdown and reimagined the exhibit as an online experience.

The final installment of this project features a series of interviews that shine the spotlight on 7 women artists whose work is part of the UNB Permanent Collection.  In celebration of International Women’s Day, artists Jean Rooney, Jennifer Pazienza, Amy Ash, Nancy King Schofield, Karen Ruet, Ann Manuel and Vita Plume talk about their work, their creative process, and their experience as a woman artist in the 21st century.

The first interview will be released on Monday, March 8, International Women’s Day, as part of a collective celebration of the achievements of women. Interviews will be released on Wednesdays throughout the month of March until April 14. These interviews can be viewed online at https://www.unb.ca/cel/enrichment/art-centre/events.html

The UNB Art Centre gratefully acknowledges the support of the Sheila Hugh Mackay Foundation through a Signature Grant and the Province of New Brunswick Department of Tourism, Heritage and Culture for a COVID-19 Special Project Grant.  These grants made it possible to profile over 50 New Brunswick artists in our online and social media gallery spaces, connecting not only with our local community but with the larger global community as well.

Calls to artists

CALL FOR ARTISTS TO CREATE A MURAL AT NBEX HORSE BARNS

The Fredericton Trails Coalition, in partnership with the New Brunswick Provincial Exhibition (NBEx), has just released a call for artists to create a mural along the two south-facing walls of the NBEx horse barns which run parallel to the City’s Valley Trail (between Smythe st and Rookwood, across from the Superstore parking lot).

The main goal of the mural is to address the ongoing graffiti and tagging of the walls and provide a safer, and more user-friendly experience for the neighbourhood and those using the City of Fredericton’s Valley Trail. We are aiming to have the mural completed by September 10, 2021.

The call for artists is being done in two phases: the first phase, which closes on March 31 2021, will qualify a maximum of five artists or artist collectives.  At the second phase, the selected artists will be asked to submit a proposed design for the mural. A $500 honorarium will be paid to phase two artists. The winning proposal will be announced in early June, and the start date for painting the mural will be in July.

If you are, or know of, an artist or designer with experience creating murals, and would like to participate in this process, go to:www.frederictontrailscoalition.com to find more about the scope of the project and submission details.   Application guidelines are found here:  mural-application-guidlines.pdf (ipage.com)
