You are warmly invited to join diverse interactive panel discussions addressing different aspects of the topic of the GYA’s 2021 International Conference of Young Scientists, "Trust in Science", starting with the Satellite Panel "Trust in Climate Science" on 22 March 2021. 

Also, please save the date for the public day of the 2021 GYA Annual General Meeting and International Conference of Young Scientists on 2 June. The public programme will contain options to engage over a span of 12 hours with GYA members, alumni and partners. More information on the programme will be available by the end of March, but for now, please do mark your calendars!

The GYA's 2021 Annual International Conference of Young Scientists is being held online.
You are warmly invited to save the date for the main day of the conference, when interactive panels will address "Trust in Science" in relation to science communication, open science, science advice and citizen engagement.

Citizen science advancing the United Nations SDGs


Citizen Science for Reducing Exposure to Urban Air Pollution, the GYA North-South Interdisciplinary Grant winner from 2019-2020, has issued its final report, outlining collaborative research, outreach activities and resulting publications. You can read the full report here.
 


GYA podcast making (sound) waves 


The latest episode of “Voices of Young Scientists” features an interview with Alexander Sasha Kagansky.

Upcoming episodes will explore the activities and history of the GYA, and how the pandemic has affected the work of early-career researchers.

Overcoming barriers to collaboration


Members of the GYA's Science Diplomacy in Southeast Asia working group have published an article in Science & Diplomacy highlighting the urgent need for research collaboration in the region.

Anna Harris (Maastricht University, Netherlands) and Lisa Herzog (University of Groningen, Netherlands) recently collaborated on an article titled "What might mushroom hunters teach the doctors of tomorrow?"

News from Our Members and Alumni

Goran Bandov (University Center for International Relations and Sustainable Development at University of Zagreb, Croatia) has been appointed to the Croatian Parliament's Foreign Policy Committee. This is his third mandate in Croatian parliament committees since 2013. More information is available here

Co-Chair Anindita Bhadra (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research Kolkata, India) has been awarded the Janaki Ammal-National Women Bioscientist Award 2020-21 in Young Category.

Anna Harris (Maastricht University, Netherlands) has published a new open access book titled A Sensory Education, on how we educate our senses using different materials.

Roula Inglesi-Lotz (University of Pretoria, South Africa) was recently appointed Vice President of Regional Affairs of the International Energy Economics Council (more information here), and was also elected a fellow at the Pan-African Scientific Research Council (more information here).
 

Executive Committee Member Sandra López-Vergès (Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies, Panama) was included in the publication titled "25 stories of women who are leading the response during the COVID-19". This document is part of the campaign #WomenLeadAgainstCOVID19, a collective initiative by the partners of the Inter-American Task Force on Women's Leadership.

Marian Nkansah (Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Ghana) has been announced as a 2021 OWSD-Elsevier Foundation Awardee for Early Career Women Scientists in the Developing World. This award seeks to recognise the achievements of researchers who have made significant contributions to the advancement of scientific knowledge. The 2021 awardees are in the Physical Sciences. Former Co-Chair Tolu Oni (University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine, United Kingdom) has become a member of the UK’s Independent SAGE, a group of scientists who are working together to provide independent scientific advice to the UK government and public on how to minimise deaths and support Britain’s recovery from the COVID-19 crisis.

Renard Siew (Centre for Governance and Political Studies, Malaysia)) and alumna Olanike Adeyemo (University of Ibadan, Nigeria) were recently both named as 2021 Aspen Institute New Voices Fellows. More information is available here


Sabina Leonelli (University of Exeter, United Kingdom) has been awarded an ERC Consolidator Award for a project on the Philosophy of Open Science in Diverse Research Environments, which was directly inspired by her work in the GYA Open Science working group. The project will run between 2021-2026 and will hopefully provide many opportunities for intersections with GYA work.

Anina Rich (Macquarie University, Australia) has co-authored a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences showing that synaesthetic colours can be decoded from brain activity. The article is titled "Temporal dissociation of neural activity underlying synesthetic and perceptual colors".

Working Group and Strategic Project highlights

Honoring the late Sahsa Kagansky at AUTM General Meeting

Members of the Bio2Bio working group will present “Bio2Bio: Biodiversity for Survival via Biomedicine” on 16 March 2021 from 16:15 to 17:00 UTC at the AUTM 2021 Annual Meeting, a gathering of academic technology transfer professionals. The session will begin with a tribute to our recently departed friend and colleague Sasha Kagansky.   
The panel will be moderated by GYA alumna and past Co-Chair Orakanoke Phanraksa (National Science and Technology Development Agency, Thailand), and will feature Anton Gupka (Dean at ITMO University and CEO and General Partner at ATEM Capital, Russia), as well as GYA alumni Vidushi Shradha Neergheen (University of Mauritius).

National Young Academies

INYAS General Body Meeting includes session on vaccine  

The sixth annual INYAS general body meeting (GBM) took place virtually from 18-21 February 2021, with a total of 5 sessions spread over 4 days. For the first time, two sessions of the INYAS GBM were open to the public. A major highlight of this year’s GBM was a technical symposium on Infectious diseases, which included information on the COVID-19 vaccine.

Science Advice and Diplomacy in the Battle against COVID-19   

The Young Scientist Forum Nepal, in collaboration with the International Network for Government Science Advice (INGSA) Asia, the Nepal Academy of Science and Technology (NAST), and the Nepal Health Research Council (NHRC), organised a webinar titled "Science Advice and Diplomacy in the Battle against COVID-19", on  21 January 2021.

The TYSA is accepting new member applications until 31 March 2021. More information on requirements and application available here.
 

New Voices 2021 Cohort seeking members

The U.S. New Voices in Sciences, Engineering and Medicine are seeking new members to join them in 2021, for a two-year term. Deadline for applications is 31 March 2021. More details and the application form can be found here.
 

2021 Arab-Germany Young Academy membership call open

The Arab-German Young Academy of Sciences and Humanities (AGYA) is pleased to announce its Call for Membership Applications 2021. The AGYA promotes research cooperation among outstanding early-career researchers from all disciplines who are affiliated with a research institution in Germany or any Arab country. The academy supports innovative interdisciplinary projects by its members in various fields of research, science policy and education.

YSN-ASM International Scientific Virtual Conference 2021

The Young Scientists Network – Academy of Sciences Malaysia (YSN-ASM) is pleased to invite young researchers to participate in the inaugural "YSN-ASM International Scientific Virtual Conference (ISVC) 2021" on the theme of “Resilience in the New Normal” from 29 March - 1 April 2021. GYA's COVID-19 page highlights work of Young Academies

The GYA has a page on its website (https://globalyoungacademy.net/covid19/) for Young Academies to link their work on COVID-19. This includes any statements or information dissemination activities, initiatives to support scientists to coordinate and facilitate institutions or governments. Please email the GYA Office or Tweet with the hashtag #covid19ya if you want to share what your academy is doing, or want to contact other Young Academies for joint activities, or an exchange of experience and best practices.

ISC Nature "Working Scientist" podcast series 

GYA members Abhijit Majumder (Indian Institute of Technology) and Vanessa Schweizer (University of Waterloo, Canada) are providing editorial guidance to the ISC Nature "Working Scientist" podcast series, iwhich was nitiated to further deepen discussion on broadening inclusion and access in scientific workplaces and organisations.

InterAcademy Partnership Regional report drafts available

First drafts of the regional reports for the InterAcademy Partnership global project on Climate Change and Health will be discussed during an online session on 3 March 2021. More information, including how to participate and register, is available here. Several GYA members have been involved in report-writing groups in Asia and Africa.
 

IAP survey on predatory academic journals and conferences

Over 1,800 researchers participated in a survey on Combatting Academic Predatory Journals and Conferences. If you missed the deadline but would still like to share your own experiences or somehow get involved, get in touch with IAP here.
The study is co-chaired by GYA alumnus Abdullah Shams Bin Tariq (University of Rajshahi, Bangladesh) with GYA member Victorien Dougnon (University of Abomey-Calavi, Benin). 

 

S4D4C Final Networking Meeting

This meeting from 15 to 19 March 2021 will not only celebrate the end of the S4D4C project, but will also provide the stage to discuss the legacy of S4D4C and additional outcomes stemming from this European and global discussion around science diplomacy. This event is open to all. More information and registration link available here
 

Wellcome Trust publishes study on health research

The Wellcome Trust recently published a study exploring the role, benefits and potential of young people’s involvement in health research. Findings include a rapid evidence review of 187 academic papers on young people's involvement in health research, with a focus on mental health, infectious diseases and climate change/global heating. Recommendations include how to strengthen young people's involvement in health research from 146 stakeholders across 18 countries, including India, Indonesia, Kenya, Senegal, South Africa and Vietnam.
 

International Science Council examines end of the pandemic

The ISC has launched a new COVID-19 project, outlining a range of scenarios over the mid- and long-term that aim to assist our understanding of the options for achieving an optimistic and fair end to the pandemic. More information here.

"Trust in Climate Science" - Virtual Satellite Event of the GYA's International Conference of Young Scientists
This GYA event brings together renowned scientists and GYA members to address trust in climate science, starting from the particular points of view of various scientific disciplines and their connection to demonstrating human influence on the earth’s climate, air, water and natural resources.

Philipp-Schwartz Initiative and InspireEurope Stakeholder Forum - Berlin/virtual
The GYA At-Risk Scholars Initiative partners with Scholars at Risk and the Philipp Schwartz Initiative to support early career at-risk scholars in continuing their careers through an international mentoring programme. Representatives from the GYA Initiative will participate.

70th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting - Lindau, Germany
GYA members Suraj Bhattarai (Global Institute for Interdisciplinary Studies, Nepal) and Huanyu Cheng (Pennsylvania State University, USA) were nominated and selected to participate in the 2021 meeting, which will be held in hybrid form this year.

2nd GYA Research Leadership Workshop - Oxford, United Kingdom
The GYA At-Risk Scholars Initiative Research Leadership Workshop is organised in cooperation with Wolfson College, University of Oxford, UK.
