Current Violence on AANHPIs

Asian Media Access condemns the senseless and violent acts against individuals of Asian descent all over the world.  The recent events in the United States are a reminder that hate, and xenophobic behavior has infiltrated our beloved country and we must all take a stand together to eradicate these social diseases.

We stand entirely with our Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) communities. We are advocating for justice, support, and understanding. We are committed to growing the acceptance, diversity, equity, inclusions, and equality.

We maximize our efforts to oppose anti-Asian discrimination, hate crimes, xenophobic rhetoric. We stand with these crime victims, especially Noel Quintana, Vicha Ratanapakdee, and their loved ones.

Stop AANHPI Hate.

Regular COVID-19 Testing at the HmongTown Marketplace

Asian Media Access' Partner - Zepto will provide on-going COVID-19 Testing every Wednesday at the HmongTown Marketplace (217 Como Ave, St Paul, MN 55103) in support of the state-wide "Youth Testing Campaign." For more information: hannah.zhang@zeptolife.com and 612-272-0131.

Over the past few months, the number of students attending in-person classes has significantly increased, with thousands more expected to return to the classroom in coming weeks,” said MDH Assistant Commissioner Dan Huff. With the rate of infection in decline, Governor Walz has adjusted the dials so children and young adults can resume youth sports and other activities. To protect this progress, we need to use all the tools at our disposal. That’s why we are asking parents to make regular testing a priority for their families. Testing can help spot a single case early and prevent it from becoming many cases.”

The recommendation now is for all youth returning to school, youth sports, or extracurricular activities to get tested every two weeks through the end of the school year.  As of today, 88 percent of school districts and charters are offering some form of in-person learning. In early December, half of all schools were in distance learning; today only 12 percent of districts and charters are offering only distance learning.

Program Updates

A Meaningful Collaboration with Rochester Cambodian Community

Asian Media Access brought another COVID-19 Testing and Asian Food Distribution event to a satisfactory end at the Rochester Cambodian Temple on February 21,2021.

Regardless of the heavy snow, many seniors and monks came out and showcased the importance of getting TESTED for COVID-19.

For this event, AMA collaborated with a local agency - Rochester Cambodian Association (RCA). According to them, about 3,000+ Cambodians live in Rochester.

Back in the 1980’s, Minnesota was the central hub for a lot of the Cambodian Refugees who survived the Khmer Rouge Genocide, and have called Rochester Minnesota their new home. Many Cambodian families back then, and now, are still facing issues when it comes to equity and quality of services.

Most of them are first-generation Cambodian people who didn’t have the opportunity to attend school as they had to be in the workforce to provide financial support to their families. Some family members had to take more than one job in order to make ends meet.  As of today, many of them are now retiring and living on fixed incomes. Some of the elderlies live by themselves, some with their husbands and wives, and some live with family members. Large numbers of them still have a mortgage loan to pay, car insurance, and other bills to pay. It is very stressful and dealing, with the language barrier as the information is important but don’t know how to get help.

Ironically, seniors also face too much information being distributed through social media and they do not know which are real and which ones are scams. There have been a lot of scams, and one current one is the “Clark Michael” as he is scamming $8000.00 from Cambodian seniors. Online information has been problematic for the Cambodian elderly group as they do not know how to read or write English proficiently.

Through this COVID-19 Testing, Asian Media Access had the opportunity to learn more about the Cambodian community in Rochester. We have been discussing with RCA to take a step further for a potential Asian American Community Influencer Network in partnership with area Asian American media outlets, to build a multi-cultural information/education and marketing network that presents original content to connect audiences nation-wide with accurate information, and present programs in heritage languages through social media lives, terrestrial radio, streaming video and print distribution. If you are interested to join us to develop such idea, please send us an e-mail at amamedia@amamedia.org for more information.

Mental Health Awareness Campaign

Since Dec. 2020, Asian Media Access has partnered with the State on a mental health/mental well-being campaign. We have kicked off with a back-to-school mental health well-being training with MN International Chinese School’s parents, and conducted bilingually by Dr. Zihui Lu, along with her Chinese and English articles to area Asian Media outlets to remind all parents to be aware of the mental health impacts by the pandemic, as well as the effective communications tactics.

Additionally, AMA has joined the #StayConnectedMN campaign to create/share messages and tips on how to support mental health & mental well-being through different types of connections and languages. Each week on our social media platforms, we consistently posted different themes, key messages, and resource links relating to mental health.

(Click to see full size image)

Week 1: Connect with yourself - Prioritizing your mental health, creating your own well-being plan, & giving yourself grace (or credit) as you are doing your best during the pandemic.

Week 2: Connect with others - Have a conversation with others about your mental health and ask them to do the same, take time to recognize those in your life, & make an effort to maintain connections

Week 3: Create a healthy environment - Our environment impacts our mood, stress levels, and mental health. Take the initiative to change up the scenery by adding the element of nature, reducing clutter, and adding natural light sources to create a more enjoyable environment.

Week 4: Know how to find help and support - Looking for a therapist to help & using warmlines and peer support can be valuable to those in stressful situations.

Using the #StayConnectedMN on social media platforms helped us, other organizations, businesses, and individuals who were also participating in this campaign reach so many people who may need these resources and have a conversation on the topic of mental health under the pandemics.

Special Spotlight, Youth Story - Smriti Samanti

Thanks to Varsha Bhatia’s recommendation, Smriti Samanti joined the 2020 Cultural Broker’s Program. Samanti was interested in gaining more experience, and the Cultural Broker program was an opportunity that caterers to bicultural identity while mixing both technical and creative skills.

During the Cultural Broker’s program, Smriti Samtani found a deeper connection to her heritage background. Samanti Stated, “I am glad that my work will be going in the community because while I hope most everyone knows that smoking and gambling is bad, it is always nice to have that extra push...and in your mother language. It feels so much more special.” Seeing and reading about an issue in a preferred language allows individuals to feel more connected and represented.

Overtime, Samanti learned how to reach and address her audience in both English and her heritage language. At first, it was not easy to mix different languages in her designs. One of the challenges was that direct translations do not always have the same literal meaning. Common English phrases did not consistently translate appropriately in Hindi, but Samanti improved and created meaningful catchy phrases for both English and Hindi with practice and determination. Samanti learned to embrace her two cultures rather than losing a part of her identity and conforming completely to her host culture.

While creating these postcard and video designs, Samtani found personal benefits in spending time researching the issues. She stated, “Cultural Brokers expanded my knowledge about Biculturalism. I didn’t know there were words like acculturation and assimilation that described what affects me and all of us in the community”. Samanti plans to continue to spend time learning more about Biculturalism and engaging with her community further. Samanti is a zealous advocate for multiple social justice issues such as environmental health and immigration law and has found a deeper dedication to helping her various communities. In the future, Samanti hopes to pursue a career that incorporates her interest in biology and science, such as Biomedical Engineering.

The 2020 election and the pandemic have accelerated the polarization of the media in the United States, hardening Americans into two information silos shaped principally by partisanship. This fractured media ecosystem has serious consequences for American democracy and institutions, from national elections to decision making at City Hall.

Importantly, the one medium that can break through the partisan divide, and bring people together around a common set of facts, is local news.

The 2021 Knight Media Forum, taking place online, will examine how local news innovators and their supporters are responding to unprecedented times, and offer practical solutions for newsrooms and funders seeking to promote more informed and engaged communities.

FRONTLINES OF ALL KIND is a new video commission documenting artists Navild Acosta and Fannie Sosa's endeavors and challenges during the pandemic. The filming occurred during the rehearsal period of the Black Power Naps opera “Choir of the Slain'' slated to premier at a Berlin theater in the fall of 2020. The opera offers a lush audiovisual landscape where rest and idleness reclaim power and offer healing for the people who are most denied rest and relaxation. Based on historic truths and recent studies, we know that race, class, and socio-economic status determine the amount of quality rest that one can achieve. Working under the strain of a global pandemic exacerbates this social inequity for many, particularly Black people who labor at front lines of all kinds. By creating a collage of the beautiful moments found against the backdrop of institutional power structures, FRONTLINES OF ALL KIND offers an insight into what liberating spaces of rest for Black and racialized people entails.

The video presentation will be followed by a conversation between artists Mandy Harris Williams, Fannie Sosa, and Navild Acosta. Black Power Naps will finish the program by leading a soundscape meditation session.

Building to Heal: A Framework for Holistic Community Development Webinar

DATE/TIME: Thursday, March 18, 2021, 12:00pm-1:30pm CST/ 1:00pm-2:30pm EST
PLACE: Online, Register here

In this webinar, Enterprise’s Meghan Venable-Thomas, Brandon Jones, and Chandra Christmas-Rouse will speak about their recently released paper: Building to Heal. They will discuss why a healing centered approach to community development is so essential and introduce the Healing-Centered Community Development Framework as a way to understand the concepts and practices at the heart of this approach.

Building to Heal: A Framework for Holistic Community Development is available in the Enterprise Resource Center. This framework focuses on a holistic understanding of health and the processes that relieve stress, achieve acceptance, promote hope and restore relationships. This includes relationships in the form of community-based interventions and how engagement takes place in that context. The healing-centered framework provides guidance on how to practice being in the right relationship with ourselves, each other, and the land for which we are stewards- especially regarding the development of brick and mortar. The pulse of this framework strives beyond merely racial justice and even anti-racist strategies in order to try on the notion of Black liberation within the field and practice of housing and community development.

TOPIC: Virtual Roundtable 1: Adapting to the Behavioral Health Needs of Underserved and Racially/Ethnically Diverse Youth

The COVID-19 pandemic on top of growing racial tensions across the nation are impacting youth mental health—including stress, anxiety, and fear. With school closures and the digital divide, young people are missing a sense of structure and stimulation and are at greater risk for social isolation while not receiving the social support that is essential for their overall mental health and well-being.

Join this NNED Virtual Roundtable to learn how community-based organizations (CBOs) working with underserved and racially/ethnically diverse youth—Black, indigenous, and people of color (BIPOC), immigrant and refugee, and lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and 2-spirit (LGBTQIA2S+)—are quickly shifting their practices and programs in today’s unprecedented environment to address these mental health needs. Responses to these growing needs of youth include bolstering methods for telehealth, shifting to more remote positions, and providing services in innovative ways. Panelists will share methods for how they are enhancing their staff’s skills and shifting roles to build resilience and competently respond in crisis situations.
