Pilot Night - Competition Aerobatics

Sunday 28 - 5pm at Wellington Aero Club

Ever wanted to know more about competition aerobatics?  Well now is your chance as Russell Bell has kindly offered to present Wellington Aero Club's first pilot evening of the year and our members are also invited to attend.

Russell is an experienced aerobatic pilot and keen member at WAC, you may have seen his yellow aircraft in the hangar at WN and wondered what it is like to fly it. If you have been lucky enough to see him fly, it's extremely impressive!

The presentation will include competition aerobatics, the competition scene in NZ, aircraft type and video footage of competition and judging for those interest in how these comps are judged.

Please contact our friends at WAC to confirm your attendance at clubcaptain@flywellington.co.nz
Medicals with Frank

February 27 - 28

Frank is at the club for another round of medicals later next month. A valid medical certificate is a requirement for anyone going solo. If you have a current medical, check its expiry date and renew with plenty of time to avoid any delays.

Go to Skycert to book.
Tony's Weekend Weather

What meteorologists call a blocking high will be hanging around the Chatham Islands area this weekend and holding back a low in the Tasman Sea (a bit like a bouncer keeping you out of a bar!).

However, a moist subtropical east to northeast flow between those systems will deliver some showers and areas of morning low cloud to the far north and the east coasts of both islands and, on Sunday, a front associated with the low will be muscling its way towards central NZ and is likely to bring some rain to Buller, Nelson and possibly Taranaki, by the end of the day. Convective showers, and possibly the odd thunderstorm, are likely to pop up in some inland areas both days. Northeasterlies tend to be kind to the Kāpiti area and we’re likely to have 2 good days, with winds mainly northerly 10-15kts. Afternoon showers may develop in Tararuas in the afternoons and while a few spots might reach coastal areas they shouldn’t be a problem.

Over the hill at Wings Over Wairarapa the weather should also be pretty good, apart from a low risk of a shower or two in the afternoons, more-so Sunday. Expect the wind to favour 06 all weekend.
Safety Message

Like most machines, aeroplanes need oil in their engines to provide lubrication and remove impurities from hard to reach areas. Without proper lubrication, parts of the engine start rubbing against each other and could potentially lead the engine to fail.

This is why we check our oil levels before every single flight. However, it is important to ensure we are doing these procedures properly. Most small GA aircraft have a wet sump system which will let any extra oil overboard if overfilled. For this purpose. we ask you NOT to refill the oil reservoir until the oil level falls to .25-.5 Qts above minimum. If you are going on a cross-country flight, take a quart of oil with you so you can refill the reservoir if it falls to the refilling range.

The engine heats up when its working, and metals expand when hot. If you overtighten the oil dipstick on the ground, the next person will be unable to unscrew it to check the oil levels on the next flight after the hot engine has made it even tighter. Overtightening the dipstick also damages the oil filling tube.

When you are checking the oil level, make sure you just make the dipstick finger tight.

How are we doing?

As part of our future plans for the clubs website and various marketing platforms we are looking for you, our valued club members, to write a review or leave a thumbs up. We need your help to spread the word about the clubs facilities and culture in order to help promote our services. It would be greatly appreciated if you could spare a few minutes of your time and head over to Facebook and/or Google and leave a review.
