Spring 2021 Vegetable Seedling Distribution: Get Growing, Victoria!

Get Growing, Victoria is a free food seedlings distribution program that was created in 2020. The City grows vegetable seedlings and then works in partnership with community and non-profit organizations to distribute food seedlings in the Spring and the Summer to the community! The NPNA participated in this program in 2020, and we're excited to be a part of it again this year.

The project prioritizes support for people who have been disproportionally impacted by the pandemic and want to grow food at home, but that may be facing barriers to access to food plants and garden materials, or are facing barriers to access fresh, locally grown food.

That may include, but is not limited to, those who have experienced loss of work, Indigenous people, people who are immunocompromised, people with disabilities, seniors, at-risk youth, families in need, and/or people who self-identify as food insecure.

For more information visit here.

If you would like to receive seedlings please complete this survey!

Spring vegetable seedling distribution will take place at Franklin Green between May 17 - June 6, 2021

Have you completed the online surveys? You have until March 14 to fill them out!

Update on sheltering in Central Park: Council revisiting status of sheltering on March 4, 2021

On January 21, 2021 Council temporarily banned sheltering in Central Park. Council will be revisiting this decision on March 4, 2021. The NPNA is advocating that Mayor and Council support the staff recommendation brought forward on January 21, 2021 to immediately “add Central Park to the list of parks where sheltering is prohibited.”

The sheltering that took place in Central Park from May through December of 2020 demonstrated that Central Park is an unsuitable location for both 7pm-7am and 24/7 sheltering.

Tonight, NPNA Board member, Sean Kahil, will be addressing council with a presentation of why Central Park is not suitable for sheltering. You can watch the livestream or find the recording after the meeting is finished here.

If you would like to submit your own letter requesting that sheltering be permanently banned in Central Park, please feel free to use this letter writing template.

Here is the letter submitted by North Park Neighbourhood Association, Masjid-Al Iman Mosque, Quadra Village Community Centre, Hillside Quadra Neighbourhood Action Committee, St. John the Divine, Victoria Immigrant and Refugee Centre Society, Family Services of Greater Victoria  requesting that Central Park be immediately added to the list of parks where sheltering is prohibited.
