Maryland’s wildland firefighters who served on interagency crews nationwide through the busy and challenging 2020 wildfire season were honored recently in a virtual recognition event. Governor Larry Hogan addressed the firefighters with a recorded greeting and Maryland Department of Natural Resources Secretary Jeannie Haddaway-Riccio presented the firefighters with a departmental citation.

Last year, 65 Maryland fire crew members participated in 103 assignments, working on 28 different incidents in 11 states. The 2020 Interagency Wildfire Season began early in the year, with new protocols developed to mobilize firefighters in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Crews also served an exceptionally long season, serving in deployments as late as November.

LANDFIRE 2019L is coming!

“L” is for Limited. LANDFIRE recognizes the need for more frequent updates to the product suite. In response to this we are working to provide a transitional product suite as we wrap up LF 2016 Remap and move the program from bi-annual updates to annual product updates. The LF 2019L product includes CONUS and will only include 2017, 2018 and 2019 disturbances submitted to LANDFIRE directly or available in national data bases (e.g., FACTS, NFPORS, MTBS, etc.). Disturbances that occurred in 2020 will not be included in LF 2019L, nor some disturbances from earlier years if they were not provided to the LF Program. Specific information on which disturbances are included will be available once delivered (est. June 2021). Vegetation and fuels layers in disturbed areas will be processed to estimate conditions in 2021 (2021 "capable" fuels*) not 2019. Areas that were not identified as disturbed (disturbance data listed above) will be identical to LF Remap 2016 (as such there will be no changes in any LF product for non-disturbed areas).
