Energy reporting can be easy. 50,000 square foot buildings have received a temporary deferral – but the Province of Ontario’s Energy & Water Reporting and Benchmarking (EWRB) regulation still requires large buildings to report gas, electricity and water usage annually.

Energy Reporting

You shouldn’t wait to start your EWRB reporting. July 1, 2021 is not the real deadline. Without proper early planning, corporations run the risk of scrambling to remain compliant. Buildings 100,000 square feet and larger must report their 2020 calendar year energy consumption by July 1, 2021. Most privately-owned buildings larger than 50,000 square feet are not required to perform their first reporting until 2023. We've previously discussed EWRB requirements here.

Here Are Ways To Report Your Building’s Data

The Hard Way - Go through every bill from each utility for each meter and aggregate the data in a spreadsheets.

Anyone can do the hard way if you have all the documents, don’t make any errors and have the time.

The Easy Way - Apply to the utilities for an annual summary of your building’s data.

The easy way seems like the obvious choice by comparison, however, don’t be fooled that you can request the data on Monday and wrap up the reporting before the end of the week. Most utilities don’t accept requests for data summaries until March 1st, and typically take 6-8 weeks to provide the information. Unless you gather and request your information early, building operators will find themselves on June 30th, scrambling to find the missing gas bill from April of last year.

Our easy to follow Reporting Guide can assist you with the easy and hard way.
