Learn the stories behind some favorite Houston sites (and discover some new favorites) as authors Dana DuTerroil and Joni Fincham discuss their new book 111 Places in Houston That You Must Not Miss at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, March 2.

Each chapter in the book highlights a different local treasure, ranging from stately buildings like the 1910 Harris County Courthouse to heritage businesses including Spanish Village restaurant. The authors also explore the stories behind some overlooked reminders of local history, such as the bell recovered from the sunken Navy cruiser U.S.S. Houston, now displayed at Sam Houston Park. In their illustrated talk, DuTerroil and Fincham will discuss how they chose sites for the guide and will share some of the fascinating stories they uncovered.

Saturday, March 6: Explore the life and legacy of businessman, builder and statesman Jesse Jones

This program was rescheduled from February 16. If you already signed up for the February date, there is no need to re-register.

Join award-winning author Steven Fenberg at 4 p.m. Saturday, March 6, for a discussion about Jesse H. Jones, the man often called "Mr. Houston." Jones was Houston's preeminent developer in the first half of the 20th century and played pivotal roles in bringing the United States through the Great Depression and preparing the nation for World War II.
After moving to Houston in 1898, at age 24, Jones became one of the city's most active civic leaders. He championed construction of the Ship Channel, nurtured the performing arts and built homes, hotels, theaters and skyscrapers. In public service, Jones chaired the federal Reconstruction Finance Corporation, the infrastructure bank that saved capitalism during the Great Depression and militarized industry in time to win World War II. In his talk, Fenberg will cover Jones' life story, his remarkable achievements and how his commitment to civic engagement and good government can still be models for us today.
