WORLD BOOK DAY- THURSDAY 4TH MARCH 2021
World Book Day is Thursday 4th March 2021.
This year will be a little different as some children are at home and some are at school. Every day is a reading day at Mayflower. However, on Thursday 4th March, if your child would like to dress up as his/her favourite book character, then they may do so!
We will be doing Drop Everything and Read Sessions throughout the day. Every hour! At 9.15, 10.15, 11.15, 12.15, 1.15 and 2.15 we will be stopping what we are doing and reading a poem, a story, some facts, a joke etc to the children via TEAMS. We will also be watching authors reading from their books and completing lots of bookish activities.
We have got the World Book Day vouchers and we will send them home when all children are in school from the 8th March. Don't worry, I have checked and the vouchers can be used in shops after the deadline of March 28th. Book shops have extended the dates - phew!
ONLINE READING JOURNAL
WATCH VIDEO FOR USING ONLINE READING JOURNAL-
Our Online Reading Journal seems to be going from strength to strength each week. This week, so far over 60% of Y1-Y6 pupils have submitted their Online Reading Journal. There is still time to submit this week too.
A new feature of the Online Reading Journal, is the option to add a photograph of your child reading for pleasure.
Click on the picture of the phone (above) to watch a quick video that I have made to show you how to use it.
Please remember though- hit SUBMIT on every Thursday.

MAYFLOWER READING PADLETS
Did you know that we have 3 Reading Padlets? A padlet is a great way for us to share what we are reading. You can add a picture or video of whatever you are reading, as well as a written comment. Click on the pink cross and then you add your picture and comment. It takes 2 minutes to do and is a fantastic way of finding new things to read. Have a look at some of the books on our Padlets at the moment...
Step up

ATTENDANCE for all is a must. Pupils who are on time and are fully engaged, make more progress. They go on to have better life choices. Step up to the mark.
FAVOURITE CHILDHOOD READS- WHAT DID YOU ENJOY READING AS A CHILD?

Recently on Twitter, I shared one of my favourite childhood stories. I remember my mum reading this book over and over to me as a child. Bedtime story was always a special moment. Some parents and staff replied to the Tweet and shared their favourite stories as a child. What was your special book? Does your child have a loved book that you read or share with them?

Our next Mayflower Community Chat will be on Thursday 18th March at 1-2pm. Come along and join in with the fun and chat about everything and anything reading!
This week we discussed our favourite magazines, business based books, new children's books and books that we are looking forward to reading on the beach this Summer.

Everyone is welcome- on the 18th March, the children will be back at school, so why not come along, join in with the chat or just relax and listen.
Engage

ENGAGING IN NEW EXPERIENCES
enables pupils and their families to create a fresh sense of perspective whilst developing their talents and interests.
FRIDAY FIRESIDE READ IS BACK
I am thrilled to announce that our Mayflower Friday Fireside Read will be returning this Friday at 6.30. Your child is welcome to join in this session through their TEAMS calendar. They need to bring something that they are reading or love to read. I read a short story to start the session and then the children take turns to talk about what they are reading. We love hearing their favourite jokes, science books, fact books, comics, even their favourite yummy recipes. All reading is welcome! Come along and join in the fun, 6.30-7pm this Friday.

Together We Can...
Focus

ATTENTION and focus are key learning behaviours that pupils are taught. Pupils learn how to organise their ideas, accelerate progress and achieve the highest standards.

Empower

DEVELOPING the talents and interests of our pupils and their families sits at the heart of our ‘Together we can…’ ethos. Empowerment fuels improvement for all.
OPEN UNIVERSITY/ UKLA PLYMOUTH TEACHERS READING GROUP
Every 6 weeks, teachers across Plymouth and the South West meet up virtually to discuss reading for pleasure. We read research about the best ways to engage children in reading. We then make plans as to how we can use this research to help the children in our schools.
This week, we tested our knowledge to see if we could write a list of A-Z of children's book authors. Have a go, see how many you can think of!
We also share book recommendations. Have a look at the books that we discussed this week. There are books for all ages and they all come highly recommended.

BOOK RECOMMENDATIONS
These are just some of the books that teachers across the South West have recommended this week. Have a look- they are not what they seem!
Remote Learning has its benefits, but long days of screen time is not one of them. So what do we do to counter this?

This brilliant video highlights and shares the importance of screen breaks in order to balance the day. Class Teachers have very carefully managed your remote timetables to ensure you have plenty of opportunities for rest, fresh air and exercise. It is very important that you take full advantage of these breaks to stand up and stretch. Thank you very much to Mr White for making such a fantastic and useful film.
