19th March 2021

From the Headteacher

I have been in reflective mood this week, exactly a year on from the first coronavirus closure. I'm encouraged by the vaccine rollout, the declining numbers of cases and deaths across the country, and the 4000 negative results we've returned from lateral flow device tests in school this week. Our students have been fantastic in observing the COVID-safety procedures and looking out for each other. But we must not be complacent: a single positive case could still lead to self-isolations for whole year groups of students. If your children have any of the common symptoms of COVID-19 - a cough, a high temperature, or a loss of or change in their sense of taste or smell - please keep them at home and book a PCR test. It's better safe than sorry!

Headteacher's Blog: a year like no other

It was exactly a year ago that schools were first closed for coronavirus. In the grip of a national crisis, the Secretary of State for Education announced on Wednesday 18th March 2020 that schools would close on Friday 20th March. In this week's blog, I look back at the year that has passed, when learning has been remote for more weeks than it has been face-to-face. I think about what we've been through, what we've learned, and what might be next. Click here to read the blog

Testing update: home testing arrangements

We are almost at the end of the in-school testing for COVID-19. All consenting students in years 7, 10, 11, 12, and 13 have completed their three tests in school, along with most of Year 9, and been issued with home testing kits. On Monday, Year 8 and the remaining Year 9 students will complete their third tests in school, and receive their home test kits.

We have sent out guidance on home testing this week via email. You can read the guidance on our website here. Home testing should be carried out twice a week, either the evening before attending school or in the morning, if there is time. Testing on Sunday evening and Wednesday, or Monday and Thursday, would be appropriate spacing.

Results from home tests should be uploaded direct to NHS Test and Trace according to the instructions included in the kit. Results should also be reported to the Academy via the Google Form.

If a home test result is positive, you must:
  1. Self-isolate
  2. Inform the Academy by phone (01934 852771) and/or email
  3. Book a confirmatory PCR test
Remember that home test kits using lateral flow devices are only for people without symptoms of COVID-19. If your child has any symptoms, you must book a PCR test

Awarding qualifications in 2021: frequently asked questions

Following the information video published immediately after the government's announcement around the award of A-level, AS level, GCSE and other qualifications this summer, we have now published a set of answers to frequently asked questions about the process. This was emailed out to all qualification candidates and their families this week. You can read it on the website here, and on our dedicated Summer Exams 2021 page

School Gates

Due to some issues with the software, we are delaying the "switch-on" of the new electronic gates at the entrances to the Academy. They will be activated over the Easter holidays so we can test them thoroughly and ensure they are working as they should. Once active, they will be open for entrance and exit at the following times:

Coach Loop vehicle gate:
7.40am - 9am for drop-off
2.45pm - 3.30pm for pick-up

Pedestrian gates:
7.40am - 9am
3.05pm - 3.30pm

At all other times there is an intercom system so you can speak to reception to be permitted access to the site. This system will help to ensure we can keep all our students safe.

Performing Arts Stars

This term has seen many more impressive pieces of work and students demonstrating the core values of the Academy.Time has flown by and Years 7 & 8 have completed another Performing Arts rotation! They are just about to swap to a new subject so what better time to recognise some of those students for their hard work and dedication.

Year 7:  Evie Knight, Cecilia Brumby, Aimee Passmore, Tom Walters, Sophie Blakley, Amy Simms, Amelia Woollven, Megan Lake, Caitlyn Partridge.

Year 8: Theo Scott, Mille Pearce, Bella Phillips, Marley Prashad, Elise Gott, Morgan Lukins, Holly Giles, Megan Ball, James Lee.

Congratulations to all of these students! They have each received a certificate, conduct points and their names will be entered into a prize draw.   Who will it be next?

Lockdown Hoodies

We normally offer maroon "clubs" hoodies for students who have taken part in extra-curricular activities as a mark of their commitment. Because the pandemic has stopped many of our extra-curricular clubs and activities from running, this year we are offering all our current students the opportunity to purchase a maroon "Lockdown" hoody instead. Students who are taking part in the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme can also mark this with a maroon DofE hoody. Both hoodies are acceptable as part of the Academy uniform outdoor wear, and they are available to order now from Concept Wear

No formal educational qualifications are required, just a passion for writing!  The deadline to apply is 13th June. There is  a fee of £50 however fees will be waived if the participant needs financial support. Travel bursaries are also available. Please visit the BFI website for more information.

Meningitis ACWY and DTP Vaccinations

Vaccination information and forms will be sent home early next week to parents of Year 9 students who will be having Meningitis ACWY and DTP Vaccinations on 28th and 29th April.

Sixth Form Applications & Interviews

It is not too late to apply!  We are still accepting applications so if you have not yet applied, please use the Word application form and email it, when completed, to
6thform@churchill-academy.org

Interviews are still being scheduled with interview details emailed to students, and a separate email sent to their parent/carer so they are aware of the date and time of the interview.  Please do not worry if you don’t hear about your interview date quickly, there is a large number to process and it will take several months to interview all applicants.  Due to current restrictions, interviews are being conducted over Zoom .  It would be normal for students to be excused from lessons for a Sixth Form interview during the school day so the same will apply with remote learning.  Interviews usually last approximately 15 minutes so just ask your teacher beforehand if you can be excused.
Visit our Open Evening page for all the information about applying to Sixth Form

Music

No Black staff or students should have to change their natural or protective hairstyle in order to thrive at our school. We hope that the Halo Code will move us one step closer to a world free from discrimination, where all Black members of our community have their identities fully recognised and celebrated.
