Luke Buescher Uganda

Dear Friends and Family, I pray this letter finds you abiding in the love and joy of our Savior.
This year we have been blessed with the opportunity to see much fruit from our labors during the COVID lockdown in 2020. last year we were forced to come at ministry in a different way than normal, breaking the church into home fellowships, and focusing on meeting the daily needs of a large, already struggling community, that suddenly found themselves out of work. I had to laugh the other day as I read an article decrying the effects of the lockdowns in the U.S... the headline read "Health fear: more than 40% of Americans gained weight throughout lockdowns". What a contrast to the reality of real needs. In Gulu people were (and still are) struggling to find food on a daily and weekly basis, and in the U.S. people are struggling to not eat too much.  I found out a friend of mine had been living on 1-2 cabbages a week, mixing them with the little Posho (maize flour) he was receiving as benevolence from the church. By God's grace, and the generosity of our donors, we were able to feed 7,000 families in Gulu city during lockdowns. More importantly, we were able to share the Gospel and pray with every one of those families as they came to get food. That, along with the ministry of home fellowships that brought the Gospel out of the walls of the church, and into our communities, have lead to our churches in the city doubling in size. people from all walks of life, politicians, prostitutes, witchdoctors, students and business people, have found the hope of the Gospel and are being transformed by the work of the Spirit. one way we are seeing the outflow of the work last year is in Baptism...
In the first three months of this year alone, we have had the opportunity to baptize around 70 people! on our first day of baptizing, (pictured above), we had many youth from the community come to dedicate their lives to Jesus. As soon as the baptisms were finished, the youth, full of excitement, ran into the river to play in the water; Apparently forgetting the fact that they didn't know how to swim! Pastor Jimmy and I turned around to see three or four young men sinking into the river, and had to jump into action to swim over to rescue them. Thankfully we were able to get everyone back safely to shore. afterward we joked that after they had been baptized they were just a little to excited to be with the lord, and were trying to take a short cut!

As the New year has begun, I have been busy working on developing the land that I purchased last year. if everything goes well, I will be ready to move onto the land with at least three other guys in a few months. already we have been in the practice of doing devotions every morning at our home with anywhere from 2-7 young men from the community before the work day starts, and I am looking forward to having a more open place to continue this kind of ministry. This week the roofs are going up on three of the roundhouses on the land. Please pray for wisdom to know which men to invite to stay on the land, and what kind of rules and expectation there need to be for those who are staying there.
As this class of pastors is preparing to graduate in July, we have a busy schedule, preparing teachers guides and doing classroom lectures. recently I have been dwelling on the importance of not leaving the Lord out of my teachings, the need for first letting the word of God impact and transform me before I try to teach it to others. It is, unfortunately, a very easy and natural thing to allow my teaching in the school to become no more than a process of transferring information. having now had the opportunity to have taught through the entirety of scripture verse by verse and chapter by chapter, I find myself relying simply on knowledge and systems. I want to ask for your prayer as a teacher, that God would reveal His word to me and transform my heart day by day through it. teaching God's word needs to go beyond the physical process of teaching and learning, it needs the power of the Holy Spirit to bring the revelation of Jesus Christ, and the transformation of the heart. it needs time to be still before Him, and wait for His work through the Spirit and the Word. Please pray for me that I would be "metamorphasized" (Romans 12:1-2), by the renewing of my mind, and that I would be able to communicate that to others.
Thank you for taking the time to read this! I deeply value your prayers and support. I know that this season of life has been very discouraging and painful for many, if I can pray for you in any way please reach out and send me an email. Jesus is on the throne, He has promised that He will one day come and bring us to His Father's house, and He has left us with the Comforter while we serve Him here on the earth.

God Bless!
