Everything Kāpiti

Ngā Pitopito kōrero mai i te Kaunihera o Kāpiti

Kia ora Kāpiti

Despite some COVID-19 uncertainty in the lead up to Parks Week the 2021 edition has been a great success. We'd like to thank everyone who made it out to one or more of our events and contributed to creating an awesome vibe in our wonderful outdoor spaces.

Meanwhile, it definitely feels like the seasons are changing. Make the most of the longer nights and warmer temperatures while you can and get along to the next Music in the Parks concert - details below. You'll thank yourself in July!

Parks Week wrap up

Kids loved the bilingual story time at Mahara Place, and we had fabulous weather and turnout at the Acoustic in the Park and Park to Path fun run and walk.

After a washout last week we've rescheduled the "It's a Dog's life" event at the Ōtaki Dog Park on Aotaki Street for this Thursday from 5.30pm instead.

The park's full of agility equipment for your pooch to try out and we'll have giveaways and doggy-related stalls, plus a complimentary sausage sizzle.

Challenge for Change on lookout for mentors

Would you like to make a difference to the life of a young person in the community?

The Challenge for Change team is recruiting for mentors to walk alongside tamariki (children) to make a positive difference to their lives.

Challenge for Change is an early intervention mentoring programme for 9-13 year olds, and is one of a number of community groups receiving funding from Council's Social Investment Fund.

The Fund supports not-for-profit organisations to deliver social services that contribute to our social investment priorities; supporting connected, safe communities and improving the overall capability of the community and social sector.

To find out more about the Challenge for Change program, or how to become a mentor visit their website.

Get pedalling on Go by Bike Day

Our Go by Bike Day celebrations in February were interrupted by COVID-19 so we've decided to move the party to tomorrow.

Leave the car at home and take your bike to work or school for a great start to the day. Swing past our Paraparaumu Library with your bike between 6.30am and 9am for a free breakfast, and to have your wheels checked over by a bike mechanic.

Regular cycling has heaps of health benefits like increased fitness, decreased stress and the opportunity to wear lycra in public!

  Work updates

Maintenance at Coastlands Aquatic Centre

Coastlands Aquatic Centre will be closed to the public from Friday 19 March to Tuesday 6 April to allow for work on the hydraulic cylinders that support the main pool’s moveable floor.

Regular maintenance is important so we can continue to offer a safe facility in great condition. It also reduces the risk of bigger issues in the future.

Ōtaki and Waikanae Pools are great options to try during this closure and our Learn to Swim and Aquafitness programmes are available at both pools. Your concession card is valid at all our facilities.

Chip sealing season kicking off

Work to resurface some of our local roads is about to begin and will be completed by Higgins Contractors by mid-April.

Chip sealing will be carried out Monday to Sunday, 7am to 7pm (weather dependent), but at times some work may need to be completed outside of these hours.

As part of this work, Ames Street in Paekākāriki will be closed for two days in early April. Access will remain open to residents, emergency services and pedestrians.

For any queries related to this work please contact Higgins Contractors Limited on 04 472 8460.

Make it a habit

The NZ COVID Tracer app helps keep us one step ahead of the virus.
If there is community spread of COVID-19, keeping track of where you've been will help our health services to quickly trace close contacts and break the chain of transmission.

If you use NZ COVID Tracer, it’s a lot easier for health officials to let you know about any risk of exposure. The App can push notifications direct to your phone. The faster we can trace contacts, the faster we can prevent another outbreak of the virus.
If you’re unable to use the app, use whatever method works for you.

Keep track of the 3 Ws
• Where you went.
• When you went there.
• Who you met.
