Pontifical Good Friday Collection
Pontifical Good Friday (Diocese of Joliet) Collection
Each year, the Holy Father asks each Catholic parish around the world to take up a Good Friday Collection (April 2) to provide support to the Franciscans who provide care to the Christians in the Holy Land.

The Collection supports the work of the Franciscans in the sacred shrines and allows them to receive pilgrims, minister to the parishes, provide formation and education in the communities and schools, and care for the basic needs of the people in the Holy Land. During such a difficult season, your support is essential to their ministry.

The Catholic Answer
Do you have a question about the Catholic faith? Do you ever wonder why we do certain things at Mass? Ask away with our new anonymous form on our website and we may answer it in one of our newsletters!
Today's question is:
How do we get 40 days for Lent? Do Sundays count? The number 40 in the Bible holds a specific meaning: a period of preparation. For example, Jesus fasted and prayed for 40 days in the desert before starting his public ministry.

Lent begins on Ash Wednesday and actually ends on the Wednesday of Holy Week (not Easter). However, if you counted the amount of days from Ash Wednesday to the Wednesday of Holy Week, the total would still be greater than 40. Hmm...

This is because Sundays actually do not count! Sundays are mini-Easters and a day of rest. We are not obligated to fast (or give something up) on a Sunday or a Solemnity because they are days of celebration.
