Restock the Pantry & Help Roosevelt Families in Need
The Roosevelt PTSA Packs for Teens program provides families in need with food, toiletries, and cleaning supplies. Please help us to restock our pantry by shopping the Pantry wish list. Items purchased from the Target wish list will be shipped to pantry organizers and then brought to the pantry for distribution. A minimum purchase of $35 may be required for delivery. As an alternative, your donations through our secure site are greatly appreciated.
It’s award season! Golden Globes, the Oscars and the PTSA
Be a part of the process and nominate your choice for the following awards. Write a paragraph, or two, about why you feel your nominee is the best choice for the Golden Acorn, Outstanding Advocate, Outstanding Student Advocate and/or Outstanding Educator Award. Send your nominations to rhsptsa2020@gmail.com, and a committee of three will pick the winners. They will be announced at the General Membership Meeting on May 3rd! Art Exhibit - Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle
Seattle Art Museum, March 5 - May 23
Jacob Lawrence: The American Struggle questions the stories we’ve been told by amplifying narratives that have been systematically overlooked from America’s history. This exhibition reunites Lawrence’s revolutionary 30-panel series Struggle: From the History of the American People (1954–56) for the first time since 1958, and SAM will be its only West Coast venue. These modernist paintings chronicle pivotal moments from the American Revolution through to westward expansion and feature Black, female, and Native protagonists as well as the founders of the United States.

After 20 years leading the Odessa Brown Children's Clinic, Dr. Ben Danielson resigned in November in protest over what he claimed were racist practices at the clinic’s venerated parent institution, Seattle Children’s. Crosscut Northwest Newsmakers sits down for an extended conversation with the man in the middle of the story. Hear directly from him about what led to his decision, see how he feels about what has happened since, and get his perspective on the fight against systemic racism. Seattle Skills Center Info Session -March 18th at 5:30pm
The Seattle Skills Center is a FREE SPS program that prepares and advances high school juniors and seniors for college, career, and life. Skills Center provides this training through regular school year courses and our summer program. Courses offer 3 high school credits for one year course completion, industry recognized certification, advanced learning, and college credit. All Access Arts Streaming
The Creative Advantage is expanding the ALL ACCESS Arts Stream and this March and April they’re offering free high-quality, accessible, live, out-of-school time arts classes for students. All classes are free and advanced registration is required. Learn more!
Youth Maritime Program 2021
The Goodwill Youth Maritime Program is a two-year program that provides high school students with a smooth transition through their senior year toward a career in maritime. The program helps build strong soft skills and helps connect students with future career opportunities in the maritime industry. Check it out here
UW Summer Nursing Camp
There will be a fully online Nursing Summer Symposium. Current high school sophomores and juniors who are interested in learning about the nursing field and how to get into nursing school are invited to apply. Held completely online from July 12 – 16, 2021. Application by April 15th. Apply Here
Young Executives of Color
YEOC is a FREE nine-month college pipeline hosted by the UW Foster School of Business. Students attend sessions one Saturday every month on the UW Campus. The program serves and cultivates the academic potential of underrepresented high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors in the state of Washington. Deadline May 1st. Apply Here
Summer STEM Institute
The Summer STEM Institute is a six-week virtual summer program for high school students. The program was started last summer by educators, students, and graduates from Stanford, Harvard, and MIT to continue educational opportunities during COVID-19. The program consists of three parts:
- Research and data science bootcamp
- Masterclass lecture series
- Mentored research project

Quest Bridge: College Prep Scholars Program – High School Juniors
The College Prep Scholars Program equips high-achieving high school juniors from low-income backgrounds with the knowledge, confidence, and resources to apply to top colleges. College Prep Scholars are historically five times more likely than other applicants to receive full four-year scholarships through the National College Match. Application deadline: March 24th.

Boys Lacrosse
Registration is now open for the Roosevelt Boys Lacrosse 2021 Spring Season. Early registration runs until March 8th. Practices begin on April 19 and the season will run through June 19. Boys lacrosse is an ASB club sport. Interested players should visit the team website to register. Questions can be directed to Coach Drew Wright. Scholarships are available upon request.

43rd Legislative District Virtual Town Hall -Saturday, March 13, 1:00-2:00 PM
Reps. Nicole Macri and Frank Chopp and Sen. Jamie Pedersen will share their thoughts on their legislative priorities and answer your questions on the issues you care about. Help Prevent School Budget Cuts
Seattle Public Schools and other districts in the state are experiencing declines in enrollment this year, and in the upcoming school year. Declines in enrollment mean less funding and fewer teachers - Roosevelt is projected to lose 7 teachers next year. Additionally, since state transportation funding is dependent on transportation used in previous years, there may be a decline in state funding for transportation just as schools reopen. We need the state to step in and keep districts whole during this time of uncertainty. Please email your legislators, and the legislators in charge of crafting the budget, and tell them that they need to preserve school funding at pre-Covid levels. Seattle Council PTSA has drafted a sample letter that you can use, which includes legislator email addresses, but personalized letters are very helpful.
Washington State PTA Legislative Report
March 9th was the deadline for bills to come out of committee so they can be reviewed by the other chamber of the legislature. Unfortunately, the bill that would have outlawed high capacity magazines for firearms (SB 5078) did not make it to a vote. But several bills that align with the WSPTA legislative agenda are still alive, including HB 1139, which would mandate remediation of lead in school drinking water outlets. One important bill to monitor is E2SSB 5128, which would have provided school districts with transportation funds to minimize the impact of fewer students riding buses this year. The bill now essentially requires districts to use federal funds to cover any transportation deficits before any state funds would kick in. Protect School Children From Lead Exposure
Washington State PTA supports House Bill 1139, which would pay for and require testing for lead, and remediation of public school outlets (faucets, etc.) that have elevated levels of lead. The fix can be as simple as installing filters on contaminated faucets. Lead can negatively impact children’s physical and behavioral health, even at very low levels. Please protect our children from lead exposure by supporting HB 1139. The easiest way to do this is by clicking "Comment on this bill" when you click on the link to the bill.

Ending the Silence - Mental Health Event
PNW Parent Education and the National Alliance present a second version of “Ending the Silence” on Monday, March 29, 2021 at 6:30 pm. This FREE online event is for parents/caregivers AND their tweens/teens who are in grades 6-12. The goal of this relevant and engaging presentation is to begin a larger discussion about mental health so that young people dealing with mental health conditions or simply struggling with the intense emotional burden of current events will realize they are not alone. Executive skills are critical to the acquisition of academic skills, but, more importantly, they are the skills students need to get things done. They are brain-based skills such as task initiation, sustained attention, working memory, planning, organization, and goal-directed persistence that are absolutely critical to school success. Dr. Peg Dawson, co-author of the books Smart but Scattered and Smart but Scattered Teens, will describe how these skills develop throughout childhood and suggest strategies parents can use to help children acquire the critical skills they need to be successful students. Show How Covid Has Impacted Your Life
Mission InspirEd, a student-run nonprofit from Seattle, is sponsoring Tales of Quarantine, a free nationwide initiative challenging students ages 6-18 to showcase COVID’s impact through a wide variety of artistic expressions. The competition will span from February 22nd through March 21st and cover three categories of art: Media, Visual, and Writing. Students are encouraged to submit an original piece of artwork that showcases their creativity and skills, and can win up to $1,000 and be featured on the news.
2021 US District Court and Ninth Circuit Essay Contest
This year’s essay and video contest asks students to consider a fundamental question—“how should we as a society strike the appropriate balance within the framework of our Constitution between safeguarding our rights and fulfilling our responsibilities to each other?” Students should focus on important events in American history and global events that have challenged us to find a balance between inalienable individual rights and collective responsibilities to each other. Our core methodology, the story exchange, is designed to help students understand that their voices, stories, actions and lives matter, and that they have the power to change, rebuild and revolutionize systems. Families can pick up breakfasts and lunches Monday-Friday, 11:15AM-1:15PM at 40 area schools, including Bryant Elementary, Sand Point Elementary, Eckstein Middle School, Nathan Hale High School, and Olympic Hills Elementary. Guide for Urgent Care
Not sure whether you should take your child or teen to urgent care or the emergency room: Seattle Children’s has a new guide in English, Spanish and Arabic. Urgent care doesn't do well visits, sports physicals, or return to play after concussion. You can contact your primary care provider, or the teen health center will gladly assist you with those services. Call to make an appt. 206-527-8336 or go to this link to register.

The Neighborcare Health Center at Roosevelt offers both remote and scheduled, in-person visits to students. Volunteers Needed at SPS Schools
If you are in a position to add a volunteer commitment to your life in support of students most adversely affected by COVID-19, please consider volunteering remotely to support students and educators. Training on using MS Teams (our virtual classroom platform) will be provided - you do not need to have this software on your computer. Please view the most urgent volunteer support needs here. Then, complete an interest form so you can be matched with a virtual classroom!
