Public Safety Update
March 12, 2021

Dear Neighbor,

There have been multiple reports of shots fired throughout the 39th Ward this week. This surge in violence is unacceptable. I have requested additional officers and resources from Chicago Police Superintendent Brown and Mayor Lightfoot. Effective immediately, there will be an increased police presence in the 39th Ward.

While each of the following incidents are still under investigation, we can confirm:

  • On March 10, 2021, the Chicago Police Department (CPD) responded to reports of shots fired at the intersection of Peterson and Cicero Avenues. Shell casings were recovered.

  • On March 10, 2021, CPD and the Northeastern Illinois University Police Department (NEIUPD) performed an investigation surrounding reports of shots fired on campus. The campus was placed on lockdown and given the “all clear” following an extensive search.

  • On March 12, 2021, CPD responded to reports of shots fired and recovered shell casings at the intersection of Kilbourn and Sauganash Avenues.

  • On March 12, 2021, reports of shots fired in the 3900 block of West Glenlake Avenue were called into the 17th Police District. The incident involved an off-duty Chicago police officer. No one was injured in this incident. The Civilian Office of Police Accountability is investigating this incident.

It is imperative to call 911 if you see or hear anything suspicious. Please stay safe, vigilant and check on your neighbors.

Very truly yours,

Alderman Samantha Nugent
