COVID-19: What you need to know now

We can see a light at the end of the tunnel in our long, difficult journey through the coronavirus pandemic. A year after the economic shutdown, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports that new cases of COVID-19 and hospitalizations have decreased and more people are getting vaccinated.

But this is not the time to let down our guard. The virus continues to infect and kill people. Only a small percentage of U.S. residents have been fully vaccinated. The Latino Community Association urges everyone to observe CDC guidelines: wear a mask, stay six feet away from others, and wash your hands frequently to prevent the spread of COVID-19.

VACCINATIONS

Because vaccine supply is limited and the demand is high, it may be difficult for people in eligible groups to schedule an appointment. Here is a list of who is currently eligible for the vaccine.

Here is a form for Central Oregonians to sign up and get a notification when vaccination appointments will be available. For questions, call 541 699-5109.

When local clinics receive a supply of vaccine, they will reach out to their eligible patients and send a link to complete for an appointment. A few pharmacies also offer the vaccine: check their websites.

TESTING

Many clinics in Central Oregon are offering COVID-19 tests and there are a few free drive-through events. Visit https://www.deschutes.org/health/page/covid-19-testing

At LCA, we are distributing free masks, hand sanitizer and alcohol wipes at our offices in Bend, Redmond and Madras, and at our limited in-person events. Call 541 382-4366.

Can I get an Oregon state ID?

If you don’t drive, you can now get an Oregon ID card even if you lack a Social Security card. The Oregon Legislature passed HB 2015 (Drivers Licenses for All) in 2019, but the law didn't go into effect until Jan. 1, 2021. It allows residents who pass driving tests and pay fees to get a standard driver’s license, even if they lack documents to prove legal presence in the U.S.

While most applicants want a driver’s license, some people might just want an official, legal ID. To apply for an Oregon ID card, visit the website https://dmv2u.oregon.gov/eServices/_/   This site has a translation tool in the upper right corner on the main page.
  1. Click on “Make an Appointment.”
  2. Then answer the question “I want to” with “Get my Oregon License/Permit/ID.”
  3. Click “Get My First ID Card” (if you've never had one) and
  4. Then click “Schedule Appointment.”

You will need to bring documents from this list to your in-person appointment:

Para español, visite esta página:
https://www.oregon.gov/odot/DMV/driverlicenseforall/Pages/Espanol.aspx

The card will cost $44.50. DMV offices accept cash, checks, money orders (exact amount only), debit and credit cards for payment. Make checks and money orders payable to "Oregon DMV."

State offers relief for small immigrant-owned businesses

The Small Business Enterprise Fund/Fondo para Microempresas can provide relief to Oregon businesses that lost income because of the pandemic, but were excluded from federal assistance due to the owners’ immigration status. The business owner must have an ITIN, DACA, TPS or other acceptable document.
To apply, Call 1 (888) 274-7292 Monday-Friday, 9am-6pm
The fund has $10 million available to provide one-time grants between $7,000 and $25,000 to eligible small businesses that have been affected by COVID-19.
