TODAY’S EVENTS - SATURDAY, MARCH 13


11am MISSING THEM, an open data journalism project to document New Yorkers who have died due to COVID-19 RSVP 
💐🌹The MISSING THEM project has evolved into a living memorial of nearly 2,000 publicly-identified deaths — all vetted with public records, searchable, filterable and grouped by occupation — and nearly 300 obituaries written.MISSING THEM is the only programmatically-backed, investigative journalism project focused on those who have died from COVID-19 in the United States.

11am Up Close and Personal: Isochrones and Interaction in a Flood of DataRSVP
🌊📈This event will be a discussion about CovidCommitment.org, nycvaccinelist.com, and what we learned in designing information and attention flows to lessen the harm caused by the pandemic. This talk will be aimed at a general audience and will be beneficial to anyone interested in data visualization, behavioral science, public health, or interaction design.

11am Real Estate Public Data Scavenger Hunt RSVP
🏠🏃The event is for anyone interested in property open data. While the presentation is geared towards beginners who are learning about NYC’s open property data for the first time, the scavenger hunt portion will be for both technical (i.e. people who can use Excel, SQL, or Python for data analysis) and non-technical people alike.

11:30am #SystemsThinking NYC Part 2: Dialogue RSVP
🧠🗽This workshop is geared towards systems thinkers with a background in digital marketing, social media, community organizing campaigns geared towards the Bronx, and data collection for local government organizations working on transportation and mobility issues.

12pm The Role of GenZ in the Online Data Privacy MovementRSVP
💻⌨️The goal of this session is to bridge the gap between the most engaged users of data-driven technologies, Generation Z, and those who create and regulate tech. How can more Gen Zers participate in tech privacy conversations? How can technologists and other career professionals empower young people to voice their privacy perspectives?

12pm MTA Data for Web Dev Using Python RSVP
🚆🚄Learn how to use the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) data to create an interactive web development experience using HTML/CSS, Javascript and Python (Flask and Jinja) to parse and clean the data feed for a visual user experience. This workshop will require an intermediate to advance knowledge of HTML/CSS, Javascript and Python.

12pm East Village Restaurants Community HackathonRSVP
🥡💻We aim to bring more visibility to these restaurant businesses, and promote local solutions, maps, and tools, when someone searches for restaurants. Whether you are a designer, restaurant owner, community member, or just love to eat at your favorite local spots, we want you to participate in this fun day of change.

1pm Decoding New York City’s Parking Signs RSVP
🗽🚏 Curbside parking: where is it, and who is it for? NYCDOT publishes a dataset of the location of every parking sign in the city. I walk you through the process of turning this into usable data on the City's curbside space. You can help address some of the shortcomings of the data.

1pm Portable Network Kit (PNK) Live Plug and PlayRSVP
🔌▶️ Join the HPCN & CTNY to view a live Portable Network Kit (PNK) demonstration alongside some of our Winter Digital Steward Training Academy participants. This workshop will teach students how to connect a PNK and make virtual connections across our campus, as well as and explore the use of the applications that make PNK's valuable communications devices before, during, and after a climate emergency.

2pm Learn how to use OCA housing data to advocate and inform policy making: Hosted by the NYC Council Data Team, the Housing Data Coalition and the Furman Center — RSVP
📊🏡 Join us for an interactive event intended to introduce participants to a public dataset of housing court filings from the New York State Office of Court Administration (OCA) currently being hosted by the Housing Data Coalition on github. Come explore this important dataset with members of the New York City Council, the Furman Center and the Housing Data Coalition.

2pm Sidewalk Widths: From Open Data to Open Source RSVP
🚸🔢The emergence of COVID-19 made city dwellers hyper-aware of how the width of sidewalks impacts their ability to maintain social distance. Join me for a demo of this project where I will walk you through how to use the Sidewalk Widths open source code to make your own interactive map.This will be a valuable demo for you even if you're new to GIS, coding, or building web maps.

3pm How have New Yorkers been faring since 2020? – A Data Science Approach RSVP 
🚖🗽From political unrest to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been living in very eventful times. We will showcase a data story about how the everyday lives of New Yorkers may have changed from 2019 to the present using 311 Call datasets from NYC Open Data and the Consumer Complaints dataset from the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.

Data Through Design

Data Through Design is an independent collective which organizes an annual data art exhibition featuring works that creatively analyze, interpret and interrogate data made available in NYC’s Open Data Portal, a valuable civic resource aimed at increasing information access and transparency. The exhibition opening is a highlight of the New York City Mayor’s Office of Data Analytics and BetaNYC’s Open Data Week.
