Also in the next newsletter..................................

The Vote on Changing the Bye Law relating to Dogs at the Club

As you probably know by now there is a proposal to allow dogs onto a limited area of the lawn, and the next newsletter will contain a simple yes/no voting option.  he Vote will remain open for 9 days.  All the documents relating to this can be found in the Members area of the Website on the Sailing Club Manager page - click the button below, but you will need your own log in to see the members area.

Who cannot vote?

In accordance with the Club constitution there are some categories of membership who are ineligible to vote.   These are Country Members, Social Members, Associate Members, Under 18s, Winter Members and Affiliated Clubs.   Those people will receive a version of the 28th March newsletter which does not contain the voting buttons.

Who Can Vote?

Anyone who does not fall into the above categories, but they will only be able to do so if they are in receipt of the newsletter to a unique email address.   If you have members of the family eligible to vote who do not get their own copy they must submit their email address by Friday 26th March at the latest, to newsletter@papercourt-sc.org.uk    If they want to be removed from the list after the vote, they just have to let us know.   It will not be possible for the newsletter to be forwarded to another member so that they can vote - the system will not allow the vote.

Club Re-opening Friday 2nd April  Easter Series

We re-commence sailing at the club with the Easter series which will run for 4 days (Friday 2nd to Monday 5th April) three GH races each day with 6 races to count.  All races will start at 11am apart from the Saturday when we will start racing at 1.30pm as it is the first day back for all our training teams and students.

As we come out of lockdown there are still restrictions on what we can and cannot do but we will give more details of how the club will run in the next newsletter when the most up to date Government guidance will be available; together with details of the Sailing Programme up to the end of June.

Duties - Sign up now

Now that we are resuming sailing we need to cover all the duties so the Duties Team of Jill and Michaela have built the duties roster on SCM through to the autumn.  Now is the time to volunteer for your duties for this year.  This applies to all over 18s who are required to do 2 duties a year one between now and 31st July and one in the remainder of the year.  It is always to best to volunteer early to get the dates you want and not end up being rostered to a date that is not convenient.  You can use the Sailing Club Manager button above to get to the right place.  If you have lost or can’t remember your login please contact membership on membership@papercourt-sc.org.uk

Initially, to comply with social distancing rules, we are not rostering an assistant race officer or safety boat crews.  However, if you would like to help someone on duty who is in your household or in your bubble, carrying out one of these duties, please contact duties@papercourt-sc.org.uk who will pop you on the rota so you are credited with the duty.  As the rules change we will open up the ARO and SBC slots.

and with the return to sailing comes ...........

Get Back in Your Boats - Refresher Morning - Easter Saturday 3rd April

As it may be a while since you last sailed, we are offering a refresher morning.  This is for those who can already sail, but may have lost a bit of confidence or forgotten what they once knew.  We will give you help with rigging, launching, some land tacking/gybing  drills if required. and once on the water some gentle coaching to remind you of the basics.  9am start, changed, but not rigged.

Limited to single handers or households/bubbles in two handers. Please use your own boat if available, otherwise club boats available to hire, for usual fees.   No charge for the morning, but limited to 12 boats so you must register your interest at training@papercourt-sc.org.uk.

Beginners
+ - Six Weeks Course  18th April - 6th May

We are proposing to run a six week course on Sunday afternoons starting on Sunday 18th April.   As we are unable, due to Government regulations relating to Social Distancing, to put instructors in the boats with students, this course is aimed at those who would feel confident to sail alone - singlehanded, or two handed in household/bubble, with instructors in safety boats alongside, or those who have had a little sailing experience but really need to start again from the beginning.    Final numbers will depend on instructor availability.

There will be a charge of £60 (including hire of club boat if required)

Please email training@papercourt-sc.org.uk for an application form, or if you would like any further information.

We may run a further five week Sunday afternoon course immediately following depending on demand and instructor availability.

Complete Beginners Course - Five Week Course 26th June - 24th July

As restrictions ease we propose to run a complete beginners course on Saturday mornings starting on 26th June, aimed at complete beginners - we hope to be able to have instructors in the boats with students by then.  Please email training@papercourt-sc.org.uk if you would like to be put on the waiting list for that course.

Half Term Courses - Adult and Junior

We hope to be able to run the following - subject to Government Guidance and Instructor availability

Adult RYA Level 1:  Tues 1st and Weds 2nd June (2 days).
Junior Start to Sail:  Thurs 3rd and Friday 4th June (2 days)

Watch the website training page and the next newsletter for details of other courses coming up.   Please note that all courses are dependent on the Lockdown Easing regulations from HMG.  If you would like any further information regarding Adult training, please contact training@papercourt-sc.org.uk and one of the training team will get back to you.

ICS on Site - 12th - 15th April

Our friends from ICS will be on site on the above dates.   As a courtesy, if you need to be on site duing their sessions, please check in with them.

They still have some spaces for youngsters on these dates - https://icscourses.co.uk/
Work Party - There isn't one!

Due to the fantastic efforts at the Autumn Work Party, and ongoing work throughout lockdown by Ray and his band of volunteers, we will not need a work party this Spring.   If you see anything around the club that might need attention, when we are back in action, please email Ray on house@papercourt-sc.org.uk and let the house team know.

Get to know your committee - Judith McKnight, Club Secretary

Current Role: Club Secretary (previously Membership Secretary)

I got into sailing as a child.  We lived on a Dutch barge moored on the Thames at Laleham, just upstream from the sailing club. One day I just walked into the club and asked to join.  I acquired all my dinghy knowledge from crewing more experienced helmsmen – particularly on the Enterprise Thames Valley Bowl series.  The best of these events was the Teapot Trophy at Wraysbury Lake where the crew prize was a years supply of tea, presented by Sir Francis Chichester.
As soon as I started earning money, I bought a Firefly and have never been without a boat since. I spent about 30 years in Enterprises and used to take her to Salcombe Week and the World Championships when they were held at Looe.  These were fantastic social events even if success on the water was limited.  I held several committee posts at Laleham, culminating in being the first female Commodore in its 110 year history.

My aunt had a Contessa 32, and after a holiday with her to the north coast of France, decided to take it seriously and went to evening classes for the Yachtmaster course.  This led to a few seasons crewing for a friend who raced Sigma 33s in the Solent and often to Cherbourg, including one week at the Sigma European Regatta based at St Peter Port, Guernsey.  We also enjoyed several family flotilla holidays around Greece and Turkey.

Meanwhile my regular Enterprise crew decided to get an RS200, so I converted to single handers and had a Topper which was brilliant fun for 10 years until my knees objected to the cramped conditions.

I joined Papercourt in 2015 and after a brief Mirror season, bought my Scow which is absolutely the perfect boat for the senior sailor!
