Early this morning, before the rains came, I awoke to the rush and cry of geese flying northwest to their spring lands. I saw a green stem, a crocus of hope, pushed through the damp earth in my yard. At last, my family’s elders would receive her first vaccination.

Moving slowly through the mists to the hospital site with her, I reflected on my favorite poem by Mary Oliver. “Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers it itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese...”  At BIG, we are part of that world, of imagination, of creativity, a part of “your place in the family of things” to which Oliver speaks.

This is the one-year anniversary of our first week of pandemic life, and little has changed regarding the urgency and critical nature of BIG's community media work. In those first weeks, our team had a constant zoom meeting open all day long. We were in constant communication with one another as we solved technical and people problems worked closely with our partners and the Town of Brookline and PSB and set up our entire technical operation remotely. Since then, we have never slowed down, producing TRIPLE the amount of the previous years’ content and live streams in service to our community.

We remain remote through the summer, but will again soon offer curbside media-making equipment checkouts to our members, including laptops with editing software, and the hope that we’ll find some safe and quiet outdoor locations for remote studio shows this summer. Stay tuned for our updates about these opportunities and stay safe.

I hope you'll pause for a moment today to listen for the call of the wild geese.

Warmly,
Kathy Bisbee, Executive Director, Brookline Interactive
