March 15, 2020 will be remembered as the day the Park City ski resorts announced their immediate closure, and life as we knew it in Park City came to a screeching halt. Both here and across the nation, the economy stalled, while schools, restaurants, and businesses shut down. Travel was forbidden, and we began the COVID-19 lockdown. Most of us had never experienced a pandemic. In an odd twist, the panic played out in the hoarding of toilet paper, while others followed a more logical approach and collected hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies. Tragically, one year later, over 500,000 Americans have succumbed to this horrible, lonely disease. Our hearts go out to all the families who suffered loss of loved ones and to the long haulers who are still struggling. We extend enormous gratitude to the front line medical professionals, grocery workers, home schoolers, and delivery drivers for their enormous efforts and, of course, the scientists who worked tirelessly to create the vaccines.

As summer began in 2020, people from across the country fled their urban homes to isolate in less populated areas. With this demographic shift, Park City experienced a significant influx, fueling the biggest real estate boom market of our lifetimes. Most memorable, is the goodness and generosity of our community that lifted up those who needed it most. It's been a long, strange year, and we count our blessings every day that we have the privilege to call this wonderful place home.

THE PEOPLE WE BECAME

Rest assured that if you've been caught in a perpetual “Groundhog Day” feeling over the past year, you are not alone. Fortunately, the human spirit is indomitable, and we are inspired by the many ways people have continued to move forward in spite of the difficulties. Check out this montage of "big changes" that some people made in the face of the pandemic, provided courtesy of the Washington Post.

THE NEW FRIENDS WE MADE

You've probably noticed that Park City is pretty darn pet-friendly, and it seems that there has been something of a pandemic-induced pet adoption boom, according to our friends at Nuzzles and Co. Let's hope the trend continues until all available pets have found good homes!

WE ARE THANKFUL FOR
OUR RESORTS & TRAILS

Park City, Deer Valley, and Woodward resorts are to be commended for pivoting their business models to ensure a safe experience for guests and giving residents and visitors the opportunity to feed their passion for snow play. Our community is so thankful for their efforts. We want to give a special shout out to the Mountain Trails Foundation for keeping the Nordic trails in remarkable condition.

OUR PARKS KEPT US HAPPY AND HEALTHY

With most indoor activities being limited, people spent quite a lot of time in our parks last year. It's hard to imagine a better state to live in when it comes to parks. Utah's state and national parks were busy! The state parks shattered visitation records, and Utah's national parks also experienced a high usage rate, despite being closed for a portion of the year. Sales and rentals of RVs were also off the charts, as families looked to the outdoors for adventure.

THE SKILLS WE LEARNED

Aside from the near-mandatory requirement to improve Zoom skills, many people were also able to use their “spare time” to learn culinary arts, pedagogical exploration, and self-care. In other words, we learned to feed ourselves and teach our kids without going crazy. On any given day, it seems that most people got at least two of those right, and some folks got even more creative; or maybe just stir crazy.

ALWAYS HAVE A LITTLE EXTRA IN STOCK!

Between the onset of the pandemic and the earthquake that rocked us last March, there are plenty of reasons to make sure our pantries have a little more in them than condiments, expired soup cans, and dead batteries.

In addition to food staples, here's a list of 15 items to keep in your home at all times!

THE FUTURE OF WORK

“The Future of Work” became a reality. It wasn’t long after the inception of the internet, during the 1990’s, that then-futurists began talking about how people would someday be able to work from home and communicate with friends, family, and colleagues from our computers. The past year provided a big incentive for all of us to do just that, with everyone from toddlers to grandmas getting a crash course on how to use Facetime and Zoom. We've become a Zoom town.

"YOU'RE ON MUTE"
We can Zoom, but sometimes....just NO.

We've become masters of Zoom and working from home, at least compared to one year ago. Even so, we can't wait to ditch some things in our virtual world: zoom weddings, zoom birthdays, and anything where hugs are recommended!

Zoom meetings are just modern seances.
"There's someone who wants to join us."
"Elizabeth, are you there?
"We can't hear you."
"Can you hear us?"

PARK SILLY MARKET!

A favorite summer tradition in Park City was sorely missed last year. Luckily, Park Silly is planning on coming back this summer, and we'll be there strolling Main Street, enjoying the Bloody Mary bar near the bandstand, listening to live music, and supporting local vendors and restaurants.

First Park Silly is set for June 6, 2021.

PLANNING A VACAY AND EXPECTING IT TO HAPPEN!

Many people have had to cancel a vacation or two during the pandemic, especially in the beginning, when we weren't sure how any of this would play out. In the midst of the pandemic, Salt Lake City debuted our gorgeous new airport, which will help people fulfill their pent up demand for a real vacation soon. Beaches, here we come!

THE JAZZ ARE PLAYING - AND BETTER THAN EVER!

The Jazz-Oklahoma City game on March 11th of last year will forever be remembered for the basketball that wasn't played. The sudden pre-tipoff cancellation of the game became a precursor to widespread COVID-related shutdowns that were soon to spread throughout the NBA, USA, and the world.

However, this year's headlines are different for the Jazz, as the team is making news for having the best record in the NBA! We look forward to the return of full-size crowds in the Vivint Arena sometime in the near future, and here's hoping that they will make a deep run in the playoffs this year. Go Jazz!

LET'S GO TO THE MOVIES!

Popcorn, fizzy drinks, comfortable recliners, darkness, the big screen, and surround sound. We can't wait to return to movie theaters. The pressure is on for Hollywood to get back into serious production since most of us have streamed every possible program of interest. Did you know that Park City has its own film studio? Check out a full list of all the films made in Utah.

There is light at the end of the tunnel, thanks to the availability of three vaccines and a concerted effort to get as many willing people vaccinated as possible. Herd immunity might be possible by summer. Currently, Utah residents 50 and older, and those 16 and older with certain health conditions, are eligible to receive their vaccinations. NOTE: Any Utahn can receive their vaccine in any county, even if they aren't residents there.

“I wouldn’t have sold my house without Zach. I had it listed with another agent for three years before and no offers. It wasn’t hard to understand with Zach what I really needed to do to get my home sold. He’s very honest and principled and I wish I had started out with Zach when I originally listed my home.”    -Tim Boccia
