March PQM News Blast!
Third month tasks: Prepare the soil for planting, renewal and rebirth.
One year. It has been one full year that we have been enduring, adjusting to living in a world changed by a global pandemic. How will the world be when we emerge?  What have we learned?

PQM Presents: Recording Clerk Workshop with Jim Herr
Saturday, April 17, 2021
Zoom  - 10 AM - 12 PM

NOTE: Zoom registration goes live March 21st. Look for an update!

Sponsored by Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting - Open to Friends in the Quarter & across Philadelphia Yearly Meeting.
Jim Herr brings his joy of recording and years of spiritual and practical experience to this session on an essential practice of our faith. Jim serves as recording clerk for PYM, is a member of Lancaster Monthly Meeting, clerk of Caln Quarterly Meeting and recently retired administrator of the School of the Spirit Ministry
This workshop is open to all levels of experience. PQM hopes to support the work of Quaker meetings and encourage Friends to grow spiritually in the role of recording clerk.
News of the Quarter
Prepare the Soil for Seeds to Grow
Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting encourages meetings in the quarter to do the annual spiritual assessment, and submit their report to PQM by April 25th. PQM clerks will review and send all reports to the PYM Quaker Life Council by May 1st, 2021.

Q:   Why send it to the Quarter instead of just filling out the PYM online form?
A:    According to Faith & Practice, this traditional function of quarterly meetings, (see 2018 Letter from Quaker Life Council), supports communication between meetings, strengthens connections and nurtures Quaker life. But if it is inconvenient for your meeting, no worries!

Use the queries below or if these don't speak to you - read Faith and Practice or write about your meeting’s spiritual condition at this time.
  1. How have we sustained our commitment to staying in faithful relationship with Spirit or God during this past year?
  2. What have been the joys and the learnings of this past year, and where have we encountered challenges?
  3. How has our faith supported our social witness?
  4. How have our community members supported one another?

Many, if not most, meetings have struggled to provide consistent online children's programming during the pandemic. But Chestnut Hill MM has a gift for education that they are happy to share with all of us!

At the PQM October 24, 2020 session, Donna Pucci, CHFM member and FDS Coordinator, presented their robust first day curriculum using Google Classroom to a receptive crowd. Donna welcomed all meetings and families in the Quarter to join CHFM's Virtual First Day School - and encouraged Friends in the quarter to collaborate and share online children's Quaker lessons that can be used for years to come. (Click here for PQM Oct. 24, 2020 Minutes and information.)

To request the Zoom link for First Day School with CHFM or discuss sharing online curriculum contact fdscoord @chestnuthillquakers.org.

Germantown MM
A community approach to spiritual assessment:
"What has it been like as a Quaker in Germantown this past year?  We Want to Give Everyone A Voice ".  At GMM, several committees (Worship & Ministry, Care & Visiting, Racial & Social Justice Committees) are tasked with writing the report. Meanwhile, clerks Bill Cozzens and Karen Lightener are encouraging all member and attenders to share their personal experiences and how they see Germantown MM has fared as a community of Friends in 2020 - so many voices and views can be reflected in the report.

GMM is lifting up F/friends and their work - from anti-racism discussions, mindfulness workshops, musical performances to radio shows. Many gifts!
Monthly Meeting of Friends of Phila.
The Monthly Meeting of Friends of Philadelphia's Outreach & Welcoming Committee organized a River Walk last week. Members and attenders strolled masked and spaced, and incredibly happy to be outside together!

Ministry and Worship Committee responded in a big way this past year:
  • Sunday MFW - Zoom
  • Mid Week Wednesday evenings - Zoom
  • Limited In-Person Worship, once a month per COVID restrictions by RSVP
  • Outdoor worship as weather and spirit permit.
Coming soon! Big plans! Outdoor exhibits and signage will welcome and educate thousands of visitors, year round about the significance of Quaker life and history.

Fundraising runs through June 2021, installation is planned for December 2021 - January 2022.

Quaker Voluntary Service
In case you missed it, you can view the recording of last week's Stories of Service: QVS Alumni Panel. Here is my take: this event felt intimate in a way that I had not expected. It was as if we were in a pleasant room filled with friends, listening attentively to younger people speak of their experience. Later, someone shared,  "In my opinion, QVS represents the best hope for the future of Quakerism – engaged young people learning about the way of Friends."  Friend speaks my mind.
Interested in the Quaker Voluntary Service Fellow program? Young adults between 21 – 30 are encouraged to apply. Deadline is March 15th

Did You Know? The Philadelphia QVS house is under the spiritual care of Green Street Monthly Meeting, Germantown Monthly Meeting, Central Philadelphia Monthly Meeting, and Monthly Meeting of Friends of Philadelphia (Arch St. Quakers), and supported by the larger Philadelphia Quarterly Meeting.
Historic Fair Hill
Historic Fair Hill, a 300-year-old Quaker burial ground in Philadelphia is the final resting place of early abolitionists and women’s rights leaders. A bequest from Quaker founder George Fox in 1691, this national historic site is a fantastic community partner in the Fairhill neighborhood  greening, urban gardening, school partnerships and events.
The burial ground is located at 2901 Germantown Ave. Phila. PA 19133. Winter hours: Saturday 12 - 3 PM.  (Just check out the the burial records page!)
