TODAY: Deadline to submit proposals to the 14th RIAL Call for Bilateral Cooperation
Today, Monday, March 15, is the deadline for Ministries of Labor to submit proposals to the 14th RIAL/OAS Call for Proposals for Bilateral Cooperation. This RIAL tool has allowed Ministries throughout the Americas to exchange experiences, receive technical advice and strengthen their bonds around key issues such as labor inspection, social dialogue, conciliation, professional training, occupational health and safety, and the eradication of child labor, among many others.

8M: RIAL/OAS reaffirms its commitment to achieve a fair working environment for all women  

In the framework of International Women's Day, the RIAL-OAS reaffirmed its commitment to continue working with the Ministries of Labor to achieve gender equality in the labor market and an world of work free of gender-based violence.

Gender equity has been a recurring priority theme in the IACML. From 2018 to date, actions have been achieved such as updating the study on gender mainstreaming in the Ministries of Labor, a hemispheric dialogue with gender focal points on actions to address the effects of the pandemic on women (in conjunction with the Inter-American Commission of Women -CIM), bilateral activities on the implementation of Convention 189 on Domestic Work, and currently, in partnership with the Educational Portal of the Americas and the CIM, a course is being developed on the prevention and eradication of gender-based violence at work.

COVID-19: An opportunity to transform women's employment 

The loss of more than 30 million jobs in the region and its disproportionate impact on women, according to the IDB's COVID-19 Labor Observatory, is due mainly to the overrepresentation of women in the service sector, which was specially affected during the pandemic, the responsibility of care and the increase of unpaid domestic work. All this, aggravated by the increase in digital and technological skills gaps, which makes it difficult for them to regain or secure employment. Throughout the region, women have reported the highest unemployment rates. 

The IDB states that if existing gender gaps were closed, the size of the economy could increase by up to 22%. In view of this, it recommends that the crisis can be used as an opportunity to reshape the world of work, making it more resilient, stable and equitable for women in the region.

8M: Ministries announce actions to move towards a more equitable labor market 

As part of the commemoration of International Women's Day, the Ministries of Labor of the region announced measures to advance gender equity in the labor market. The measures include programs to promote the training and certification of young women workers, labor inspection guides with a gender focus, job fairs with a gender focus, and inter-ministerial roundtables to implement Convention 190 on violence and harassment in the workplace.
