Weekly actionable tips for journalists to earn and sustain trust

New from Poynter and Trusting News: A comprehensive, self-paced course on trust

Hi there. Lynn here.

This week, with our partners at The Poynter Institute, we are launching a new training series called "How any journalist can earn trust."

The course is our most all-encompassing training opportunity yet, covering topics like:

  • Engagement best practices
  • Day-to-day transparency tips
  • Explanations on how to define your mission and values
  • Best practices for talking about your ethics and funding
  • The importance of clearly labeling types of content, including opinion pieces
  • Tips to help your community navigate the news and insert media literacy into your journalism
  • What people think about "the media" and how your journalism fits into those assumptions

The course is designed to be self-paced. You can take it at whatever speed works for you, and pick sections to focus on first that feel most urgent or relevant.

The best news? It's FREE and open to everyone, thanks to a partnership with Poynter and funding from the Knight Foundation. If you enjoy these newsletters but haven't had a chance to dive deep into our work, this course would be a great chance to do so. Or maybe you have colleagues who haven't had a chance to learn about why it is important to build trust and how to do it. Send them to this course. And please help us spread the word

Throughout the course, there will be exercises to help you bring what you are learning into your newsroom and journalism. We will help you write an effective "About Us" page, walk you through how to assess your content labeling and help you practice your engagement skills.

Would you like input from our team about your ideas and plans? At the end of the course, you will be given an opportunity to submit your activities for feedback from us.

We hope you leave the class feeling empowered to tell a better story about your work and to defend the integrity of your journalism.

Thank you for reading!
