Kia Ora - Greetings to you all

New Class at Y7/8 in our Middle Years
We have continued to have increasing numbers of young people in our Y7/8 classes, which are now topping 29/30 students in each and all of our 6 classes. We have resolved to create another class, to commence, all being well, at the start of term 2. We are communicating with families now about the composition of the new class and our teachers are working through this too. If you have any queries please let me know.

Reo Rua - our bilingual Y7+ class
We have created a special Reo Rua class in our Middle Years which meet for 2.5 hours each week, supported by Whaea Billie, Matua Tipene and Matua Mike. Their recent panui to whanau is here. I am really delighted as to how this class is operating and we welcome whanau to come in and support us as you wish too.

Meet the Teacher/Kauri Coach - Wednesday
It was great to see so many parents connecting with our staff on Wednesday afternoon. We place a really high level of importance on these relationships - they are critical for all; not only our parents/caregivers and staff, but most of all for our young people. I encourage you to contact us at any time - email is probably best - with any concerns, queries you may have.

Middle Years Update
The end of another really busy week! Some of our year 10's are lucky enough to be sailing on the Spirit of NZ just at the time of the America's cup.  This is where they anchored last night:
You can track where they are by going to the following website:

https://www.spiritofadventure.org.nz/wheres-the-ship

A number of our students enjoyed success at Thames Valley Athletics Championships this week. Two of our Y7/8 classes went to the Miranda Seabird Sanctuary. Next week is our Y7/8 triathlon and the rescheduled Cross the River swim. All of this combined with learning can be stressful for young people.

Do you remember your days as a teenager? How did you spend your time after school? An average middle years  school student juggles around homework, sport and their social life on a daily basis.

Our students get stressed sometimes but that’s normal. Lets face it, school can be tough. Different people handle school differently.

Here's what you can do to help your child deal with the stresses of school:
  1. Never let them stay up too late and not get enough sleep. 8 hours is essential. No devices to distract and keep them awake.
  2. Ensure they eat well - a good breakfast and wholesome lunch.
  3. Encourage them to play sports, join social groups, take up a hobby or learn to play a musical instrument. Keep them busy so they don't get bored and wander the streets.
  4. Engage in conversation after school - encourage them to talk about their day. Ask about the highlights of their day and focus on the positive things.

World Down Syndrome Day
World Down Syndrome Day - Sunday 21st March

Down Syndrome is a genetic disorder that arises from children being born with an extra chromosome. In fact, it’s the role of chromosome 21 that led to the selection of March 21 as the observance day. Socks were chosen to represent the day because they are similar in shape to chromosomes. Around the world people are encouraged to wear colourful, mismatched socks to mark the occasion and raise awareness around Down Syndrome. So, when you’re preparing for the day on 21st March, put on a pair of colourful, mismatched socks to support people with Down Syndrome. It’s a simple way to draw attention to their needs and to share your love and support.
Learning Support would like to encourage you to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day. Wear your colourful, mismatched socks to school on Monday the 22nd to show your support.

We would like to introduce you to Fergie who has joined MBAS this year.

Y3-6 Swimming Carnival
What a great day for a swimming Carnival, the year 3-6's enjoyed all the races and fun events.  House points were awarded for participation and even parents who dressed in house colours were given house points. Well done everyone.
Room 17 - Fluffy Visitors
This week, Room 17 had some lovely fluffy visitors, this was very exciting and enjoyed by all the children.
Room 18 - Identity
We are unique. Our art shows our fingerprints which are unique to us, too.
Room 22 - Activities
We are so proud of our Pepeha that we spent so much time creating. They look amazing hanging in our class room.
Room 23 - Writing
Miss Pretorius was blown away by how determined Room 23 were with their writing. They wrote their stories all by themselves. Everyone was thinking hard about words they already knew and which sounds they could use. She was so proud of how hard they tried to do this on their own. They were very excited to share with their parents and caregivers at the meet the teacher afternoon.
Food and Nutrition
Food and nutrition students zoomed with NZ Beef and Lamb and Otago University to collaborate on a project collecting data on the nutrition knowledge of young kiwis.
This was a good opportunity to give student learning real context.
Y11 - Maths
This is a snip from year 11 maths class, where Milly is sharing her knowledge of trigonometry with others (teaching and learning from each other-ako).
Level 3 Outdoor Education
Rock Climbing trip
The Level 3 Outdoor Education class travelled to Wharepapa South for a 3-day rock climbing camp on Monday. The trip started on day one with an afternoon of indoor climbing at the Extreme Edge in Hamilton, followed by a full day two of outdoor climbing at the Lower Tier area of Wharepapa. The climbs ranged in difficulty and height from a casual 6m scramble to a steep and nerve racking 24m marathon. This challenged students both physically and psychologically and there were some very tired and sore bodies at the end of the day. The trip finished with a morning of indoor climbing on day three with some really noticeable improvements in confidence and technique. There was great trust, team work, and determination shown throughout the trip as well some culinary and comedic potential.
Waikato Schools MotoX Challenge 2021
Last weekend some Mercury Bay Boys attended the Waikato Schools MX challenge.
It was a fantastic event - high energy, fast paced and absolutely adrenaline pumping.

Reef Denton raced in the 11-13 85cc class and Levi Jacobs raced in the 6-8 year old 50cc MX class.  Both boys rode extremely well for their first race. Reefs best placement saw him 19 out of 27 riders which we think is pretty awesome for his first race and up against some pretty experienced riders including a rider who is #5 for New Zealand!!

Together Reef and Levi scored enough points to put Mercury Bay Area School overall 22 out of 58 Schools entered which is pretty cool!

Cathie and Rata Denton would be happy to help support kids wanting to enter these events and/or liase with other parents keen for future events. It would be great to get a little community of riders going along to these events together.
Please let Leisa - Sport Co-ordinator know if your interested and she will put you in touch with this group.
Restorative Practices Tip of the Week
Taking time to catch up

Life these days is so fast-paced. Work, making lunches, washing, grocery shopping, managing bills, emails, social media, the list goes on. Sometimes we can struggle to make time to stop and connect with our own whānau/family. Research shows that if we can take even 10 minutes a day to connect with each of our young people this can really help them to feel valued, nurtured, and appreciated. This could be playing with Lego or toys with our littlies, or having a chat about scootering or sports or what has been going on at school. Getting down on their level and taking an interest in them and their passions is so important and really helps to strengthen self-esteem and relationships.

Impetigo (School Sores)

How To Treat and When To Seek Help For School Sores

School sores (impetigo) are common in children. They are easily spread
and need treatment. Keep your child home from school until one day after the
start of treatment. Cover all the sores.
