Gloucestershire County Council is trying to shut us down by serving a winding up petition. This vengeful and malicious action serves no public interest purpose. It will also prevent us from bidding with others for lottery funding to promote waste reduction in Gloucestershire.

The Council is putting the pressure on and distracting us just as we are making our final submissions to the Council’s auditors Grant Thornton, about our Value for Money complaint. It is either a simple act of revenge or the Cabinet cabal is attempting to shut us up by shutting us down. Either way it is an outrageous waste of public funds to use one of the country’s most expensive solicitors to bully and punish a small volunteer-run, community organisation funded entirely by your and other supporters’ donations.

After last year’s High Court case against the GCC, the judge, surprisingly, awarded costs to the council. GCC dropped their claim for costs because we had insufficient funds to pay. However, last Friday a letter from top UK firm of solicitors, Eversheds, whose fees to County taxpayers are already estimated to be in the £100,000’s, was issued to us setting out the winding up process, which will be heard in court on 1st April.

As you know, our overall mission is to promote a circular economy and our challenge to Javelin Park is just a part of that, albeit a big one. For example, we are currently working in partnership with a number of local organisations on a lottery bid to improve waste reduction and reduce carbon emissions. This will support the efforts of the waste collection authorities and the county council. The GCC’s action will damage the chances of that bid’s success.

If you feel as outraged as we do, please do write to your County Councillor and MP asking them to drop this action. We really need your support!

OTHER NEWS

The message that incineration is an air-polluting, carbon-emitting destroyer of resources is starting to get real national coverage:

Were you one of the 800,000 people who watched last night’s Dispatches programme? If not you can catch it here. It was very hard hitting.

The Guardian covered the story here.

Client Earth have today launched a report here by Eunomia comparing incineration to landfill – incineration does not come out well.

UK Without Incineration Network launched a campaign yesterday calling for a moratorium on any new incinerators. Please support them by signing here

Launched today! A ‘Polluters Pay’ website in support of action to force incinerator operators to pay for their carbon emissions, with an absolutely fantastic video here.

Wales is showing the way. They already have a recycling rate of over 65% and a zero waste ambition by 2050. They launched a new strategy this week “Beyond Recycling” which you can see here, and they have announced a moratorium on any further ‘large scale’ incinerators, which we think will probably stop 4 in the pipeline from being built. Go Wales!

Once again, please write to your County Councillor or MP.
