Happy Tuesday, squad. And happy belated International Women’s Day!

1 / NCAA Hoops: Conference Champs

Dawn Staley cuts down the nets.
@GamecockWBB

South Carolina won their 6th SEC title in 7 years by downing Georgia, 67-62, on Sunday.

  • After watching Texas A&M cut down the nets last week in celebration of their SEC regular-season crown, Dawn Staley’s squad is back on top and in line for a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
  • Tournament MVP: Aliyah Boston, whose dominant championship performance (27 pts, 10 rebounds) helped the Gamecocks pull away.
History made: the matchup between head coaches Staley and Joni Taylor was the first women's conference tournament final between two Black head coaches in Power Five history. It certainly won’t be the last.

Elsewhere:
  • NC State 58, Louisville 56: Raina Perez hit a jumper from the free-throw line with two seconds left to help NC State win their second straight ACC Tournament.
  • Stanford 75, UCLA 55: The Cardinal cruised to the Pac-12 title, with their 20-point Championship rout the closest game they played all tournament.
  • UConn 73, Marquette 39: Paige Bueckers led the Huskies with 23 points as they cemented their claim to a No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.
The AP’s latest Top 10:
  1. UConn (24-1)
  2. Stanford (25-2)
  3. NC State (20-2)
  4. Texas A&M (23-2)
  5. South Carolina (22-4)
  6. Baylor (21-2)
  7. Maryland (21-2)
  8. Louisville (23-3)
  9. Indiana (18-4)
  10. UCLA (16-5)
What’s next: the Big 10 and Big 12 crown their champions this week ahead of Selection Sunday on March 14th.
  • Get ready to fill out a bracket, because the Big Dance is almost here.

2 / Amanda Nunes: who's next?

Amanda Nunes gets the win.
@Amanda_Leoa

Amanda Nunes made quick work of Megan Anderson on Saturday, defending her featherweight title with a first round submission via triangle armbar.

  • It was over when: Nunes landed a series of big punches right out of the gate, leaving Anderson wobbly. From there, it was just a matter of time.

Nunes’ growing GOAT resume:

  • 14 UFC wins (most all-time)
  • 9 UFC title fight wins (most all-time)
  • Holds wins over six former or current UFC champions
  • First and only UFC fighter to defend two titles while actively holding them
  • Longest reigning UFC champion of all-time (2,505 days)

Up next: Dana White hinted that Julianna Peña could get a shot at the bantamweight title.

  • Nunes didn’t sound enthused about the prospect, but also said she’d be willing to fight anyone.

3 / NWHL to complete Isobel Cup

The Toronto Six.
@TheTorontoSix

The NWHL will complete its abbreviated season later this month, after originally suspending its playoffs due to an outbreak of COVID.

  • As a reminder: the league attempted to stage a two-week season in Lake Placid, New York earlier this year.
  • The season was shut down on the eve of the playoffs, as less-than-perfect protocols led to multiple viral outbreaks.

Now, four of the league’s six teams will gather in Boston to complete the Isobel Cup playoffs.

  • Semifinals will be held March 26th, followed by the Final the very next day.
  • Fans will not be allowed, and the NWHL has said that stricter health protocols will be in place (e.g., teams will no longer be staying in the same hotel).

Who’s in:

  1. Toronto Six
  2. Minnesota Whitecaps
  3. Connecticut Whale
  4. Boston Pride

4 / FAWSL: Week 16 recap

Pernille Harder of Chelsea.
@ChelseaFCW

Chelsea and Man City both won over the weekend to stay No. 1 and No. 2 in the FAWSL table. Full results below:

  • Man Utd 3, Aston Villa 0: The Red Devils outshot Villa 13-0 to keep themselves third in the table.
  • Arsenal 4, Birmingham City 0: Caitlin Foord recorded a brace, Vivianne Miedema found the back of the net, and Lisa Evans added a fourth in stoppage time.
  • Brighton 2, Tottenham 0: Inessa Kaagman scored in the 64’ and 74’ minute to give Brighton the win.
  • Man City 1, Everton 0: Kiera Walsh blasted home a 81’ minute strike to help Man City sneak away with a win.
  • Bristol City 3, Reading 2: Ebony Salmon’s brilliant 79’ minute goal helped Bristol City win in a thriller.

5 / Claressa Shields needs new opponents

Claressa Shields celebrates her win.
@Claressashields

Claressa Shields dominated Marie-Eve Dicaire on Friday, winning a unanimous decision while unifying all four belts at 154 lbs.

  • She’s now the first boxer in the four-belt era to be the undisputed champion in two different weight classes (and that includes men).
  • Add that to her two Olympic gold medals, and it’s easy to see why Shields calls herself the G.W.O.A.T.—Greatest Woman of All Time.

The problem: Shields is running out of opponents to beat.

  • Her only loss came when she was 17 years old. As a pro, she’s 11-0.
  • Depth is an issue at all levels of women’s boxing, and that isn’t going to change in the near future.

Shields’ solution: switching sports.

  • She plans to make her MMA debut with PFL in June before returning to boxing later in the year.
  • The transition won’t be easy, but Shields is only 25. She has time to become a force in the octagon, having already proved she's the best in the ring.
