After conducting a national search, Kim Pugliese was selected from a competitive pool of candidates. Kim succeeds Marilee Murphy, and the Board would like to thank Marilee for her significant contribution. Over the past two years, Marilee’s leadership has strengthened CRC’s operations and delivery of its services and programs.
 

Pugliese brings experience as a development and human resources professional, and most recently served as Director of Strategic Human Resources for Challenge Industries. Her skills and experience, combined with the outstanding staff and board of CRC, will ensure that anyone affected by or living with cancer will continue to receive extraordinary support and services.

 “I have known Kim for years and could not be more thrilled to hand over the reins and for her to lead CRC into its next chapter,” said Marilee Murphy, CRC’s outgoing Executive Director. “I am confident that the organization and community will be in excellent hands given the qualities she brings to her work and leadership.”

 “I am grateful to be offered this opportunity to join an agency that is so important to our community.”  Pugliese said. “I know firsthand the difference hope and support mean to someone touched by cancer. I am honored to be able to work with such a truly inspiring team of staff and volunteers and dedicated board. My hope is to continue to build on the strong foundation Marilee created in order to grow the agency’s outreach so no one within reach suffers alone.”

Pugliese has a diverse background of experience, education, and leadership. As Director of Development & Marketing at Challenge Industries, she created new systems to track annual giving, implemented a strategic communications and major gifts program to rebuild relationships with donors and key community partners, as well as reimagined the annual awards event as a major public-facing initiative. Taking on the role of Director of Strategic HR and Compliance three months before the pandemic, she led an HR/QA team virtually to strengthen, transition and streamline operational processes; created opportunities to keep staff engaged during an unprecedented crisis while working to develop People Programs to promote professional development and a positive workplace culture; and catalyzed cross-program collaboration to ensure program and revenue growth.

“We celebrate Marilee and her many achievements while at
CRC, and we look forward to welcoming Kim and working together to ensure a strong and hopeful future for the organization and the community we serve,” Board President Jason Hungerford said.

• How do I find a therapist?
• What are the different types of mental health care providers, and does it matter which type I see (e.g., psychologist vs. psychiatrist vs. counselor)?
• An introduction to the different approaches/theoretical orientations that therapists take
• What to expect in therapy (first appointment and beyond)
• Advice on how to have a successful therapy experience (ie: finding someone who is a good fit for you, being honest when something bothers you, etc.)

National Young Adult Cancer Awareness Week April 4-10

Over the past 30 years, the incidence of cancer in young adults has increased more than any other age group. Young adults are also diagnosed with different types of cancers, more than any other age group. This week aims to highlight issues surrounding cancer in people ages 15-40 age groups. 

We understand that the challenges faced by young adults are
different from those faced by other age groups, and can benefit from discussion & support from their peers. Beth’s group supports people under the age of 50 with cancer. It meets on the 2nd & 4th Tuesday of each month from 5:30-7pm (partners welcome.)  #YoungAdultCancer #yacancer #ayacsm #ayacancer

"Social Issues in Community Engagement" seminar offered by Cancer Scientists on two successive Saturdays from 9:30-1:30pm:
5/1: “Breast cancer through different lenses”
5/8: “From diagnosis to treatment - finding the best path.” 

Students and community members are encouraged to participate. (Students will meet on campus, and community members and most speakers will connect virtually). Here's the link to an article that describes the last time this weekend seminar was offered.

Need Help with Grocery Shopping?

Kidney Disease Screening and Awareness Program (KDSAP) is a Cornell University student club dedicated to screening people in the Ithaca community, and beyond, for chronic kidney disease. During normal semesters, they hold free clinics where participants have their health evaluated by a volunteering physician (usually a kidney doctor). Unfortunately, they have not been able to hold clinics this semester due to the pandemic. Instead, KDSAP is focusing on how to improve community health through diet. They are excited to help you with your healthy grocery haul! To get assistance with grocery shopping and delivery, please contact Sharon Kaplan sharon@crcfl.net or call 277-0960.

Friendly Correspondents
Once a month, Friendly Correspondent volunteers compose heartfelt messages to some of our most vulnerable community members. A few of them create their own unique cards and envelopes. Others include photos, artwork, or cartoons they find in printed material. The response from our clients has been overwhelmingly positive - "I look forward to getting a card every month, it really brightens my day!", "Please pass along my gratitude to the volunteer who sends me such lovely cards". Some of our clients choose to write back to their volunteer card-writer, establishing a regular pen pal relationship. Regardless of whether or not they get a response, our volunteers are thrilled to offer this wonderful service and feel good about making a positive impact on the lives of those facing cancer. Last year, we started soliciting local artwork to create cards, which were then used for this program. It's a win-win-win situation! If you would like to receive monthly cards from a Friendly Correspondent, please email Sharon Kaplan.
