The United Church of Canada
We acknowledge with gratitude the traditional territories of our Indigenous and Metis neighbours and their hospitality. We offer our respect and commitment to living into right relationship with all our relations.
March 10, 2021

Information that you would like included in the Weekly News should be sent to Cherry through this email by 4:00 p.m. on Tuesdays: PrairietoPine@united-church.ca

We REALLY want to facilitate the sharing of news about pastoral concerns, celebrations, educational opportunities and events so PLEASE share them with us. Due to the volume of requests, we will be pleased to publish announcements about events on 2 occasions before the deadline for registration and/or the actual event.

NOTE: We will be aiming to send out the Weekly News on Wednesdays.

  • Our thoughts and prayers are with Helen and the extended family and friendship circle of the Rev. Alistair Riddell who died on March 06, 2021. Alistair was ordained in 1962   and ministered with people in the Brandon area, Killarney, Pembina Parish (Morden and Darlingford) and Rivers before his retirement in 1995. An obituary will appear at a later date.
  • Our congratulations are with the Community of Faith at Steinbach United Church as they celebrate this week the culmination of work, study and prayer in officially becoming an Affirming Congregation
  • We call to mind and remember in our prayers all those who have been significantly impacted through this past year as we all have journeyed with the COVID 19 pandemic.

COVID Updates for Both Manitoba and Ontario

(COVID updates in either province will be in the government links provided.)

Further Amendments to Red Restrictions - Manitoba

On March 02, 2021 the province of Manitoba announced some further amendments to the red restrictions that are to expire on March 04, 2021. Changes to the Public Health Orders effective March 05, 2021 at 12:01 a.m. that will most directly effect faith-based communities are the permission for Faith-Based Communities to gather together for regular worship with a limit of 25% of capacity or 100 people which ever is less when adhering to social distancing, masking and all other related protocols. These changes effect all areas of the province except some Indigenous Communities which may have their own additional restrictions.

Pandemic Anniversary

Recently, the Most Reverend Anne Germond, Metropolitan and Archbishop of Algoma and Moosonee, wrote to Anglican Churches across Ontario and invited them to join in marking the year that has passed. Archbishop Anne also reached out to us as neighbours and asked that we, as United Churches, consider joining along with Anglicans and other communities of faith in observing three minutes of silence at 11:35 a.m. on March 11 (or Sunday March 14) as we remember the pain, the grief, the resilience, the compassion, and the extraordinary sacrifices this past year. Here is a link to the invitation from the Anglican Church: https://www.dioceseofalgoma.com/2021/03/02/a-letter-from-the-ontario-house-of-bishops-march-2-2021/

There are also some local events marking the anniversary in different places and online.

Recently changes were announced to the academic program at St. Andrew’s College.   For detailed information about those announcements and for responses to some questions raised as the result of the news, Please follow this link.

Keep Housing Public Action Call for Manitoba

Right to Housing is a coalition that advocates for quality, affordable housing for low-income people in Manitoba. United Church congregations have been involved since we began this work, over 15 years ago.  Right to Housing is now asking supporting groups to write to the Premier and their own MLA to support the campaign “Keep Public Housing Public”.  A legacy of poverty and homelessness can follow if the current stock of public housing disappears into the private sector. Click here for the story on our website; the action itself is here:  https://righttohousing.ca/keep-public-housing-public/

Ministry Wellness Survey

As we approach the one- year anniversary of the first case of COVID 19 within the Region, the beginnings of restrictions that have led to the declaration of States of Emergencies and various Public Health Orders, and significant changes in the way that ministry happens, we are wanting to touch base with those of you engaged in pastoral ministry in pastoral charges. The Pastoral Relations Minister and the Committee on Ministry Personnel Support in the Prairie to Pine Regional Council along with those in Living Skies and Northern Spirit Regional Councils are inviting active ministry personnel currently in calls or appointments, through a survey, to share thoughts on your current state of wellness and sources of support. It is our hope that through your sharing we might become more aware of what is and isn’t happening, assess gaps in the current system and address emerging needs. Please note that all responses are anonymous. You should have received a survey on Tuesday, March 09, 2021. If you did not please be in touch with the Pastoral Relations Minister, Judy Hare (jhare@united-church.ca). If possible, we would ask that you complete and return the survey by March 31, 2021.

A friendly reminder from your
Office of Vocation Minister

It’s almost time to complete your Annual Declaration re criminal charges. This is a requirement for all active Ministry Personnel, and must be done between April 1, 2021 and June 30, 2021. Please don’t try to go into the system until those dates. Your Annual Declaration is how you confirm that you have not had any new criminal charges against you in the past year. You do not need to get a new police records check if you have not had any new criminal charges. Google Chrome and/or Explorer are the best browsers to use: please do not use Safari. To complete your form, log into your personal page at www.churchub.ca. If you experience any problems, please contact ministry@united-church.ca for assistance. If you have any questions about the Annual Declaration, please contact Karen at kmedland@united-church.ca.

NOTE from Pastoral Relations Minister: In Prairie to Pine Regional Council all ministry personnel not in current pastoral relationships who are in “formal association" relationships with a particular Community of Faith in order to exercise the functions of ministry throughout the Region or a portion of it, MUST also complete their Annual Declaration related to Criminal Charges or Criminal Records.

Chaplaincy Opportunities with the Military

The Royal Canadian Chaplain Services (RCChS) of the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) has some  part time ministry opportunities in our region that some of our ordained members may be interested in learning about. The CAF has Primary Reserve Units all across the country and each is entitled to a Chaplain.  Reserve Chaplains serve their local congregations on a full or part-time basis and also serve in the CAF with their local unit to provide part-time faith leadership. If you would like to read more about these opportunities please read further. Please click this link for more details.

Resources for Holy Week and Easter

As Communities of Faith finalize plans for services during Holy Week and Easter, we share the following information for those looking for some alternatives from the Moderator’s Facebook page on March 02, 2021:

The Moderator's message for Easter is being produced next week - it's going to be a mini-drama for Easter (and will be posted close to Easter) with the production team for that message - we're all excited about it!

As well, the Moderator, members of the General Council Executive and their families, and musicians, are offering a Good Friday experience that will be posted on The United Church of Canada's YouTube channel just after the clock turns past midnight at the start of Good Friday. I've been invited by a number of ministers to offer what I can to support them in their Holy Week experience and ministry, and all are invited to join in this time of worship and prayer. (More information - and a link - will be posted next week.

It is that time of year when Communities of Faith/Pastoral Charges with Ministry Personnel whose appointment end June 30, 2021 and those Ministry Personnel begin the process around renewal of appointments. Individual emails outlining the details of the processes and timelines associated with renewal were sent on February 23rd, 2021 directly to the emails of Ministry Personnel eligible for renewals with the request that they be forwarded on to the Chair of the Governing Body in the Community of Faith/ Pastoral Charge. New Manual (2021) Now Available

The 2021 edition of the Manual of the United Church of Canada is now available online. It comes into effect March 01, 2021.The changes from the previous 2019 edition can be spotted with the year “2021” in the margin.

As with the 2019 edition, there will be no printed version available for purchase. People are encouraged to use the version on-line or print it themselves if they prefer a hard copy.

Creative Ideas

One thing that happens during the bi-monthly connections with some of Prairie to Pines Ministry Personnel is the sharing of some ideas for worship, study and community building. Creativity can be contagious and ideas that get can be implemented in other places. Here are a few things that you may want to try in your community of faith:

For Black History Month:
*stories about the two communities featured on the two special Black History month Canadian stamps; Amber Valley, Alberta and Willow Grove, New Brunswick – Commentary by Ralph Thomas in a CTV News Clip (Thanks to Rolanda Taylor, Boissevain-Minto for this idea)
* sharing a UTube video (through Global Citizen) entitled “Children Talk about Black History Month” (Thanks to Lesley Harrison at Knox United Church, Winnipeg)

Please send 2020 Annual Report

Please send two copies of your community of faith’s 2020 Annual Report to the Committee on Community of Faith Support: one hard copy mailed to Prairie to Pine Regional Council, 1622B St. Mary’s Road, Winnipeg, MB R2M 3W7, and an electronic copy (if you’ve saved the report on a computer) to PrairietoPine@united-church.ca. These annual reports will be available for reference by the Committee on Community of Faith Support, staff, and other committees / commissions who may have need to see them. Be sure to keep a copy to be archived at some point.  The 2020 report may be of particular interest to future researchers looking at how churches did their work during Covid-19 pandemic.

Congregational annual meeting top secret secret voting strategies and more

Lots of you are going ahead with congregational meetings online, and have many good questions about voting. Here are some thoughts from Executive Minister Shannon McCarthy on not so secret ballots and your community of faith’s online annual meeting. Here’s a good resource from some of our kin in Ontario that outlines the various options. (Hint: there’s really no such thing as a completely secret ballot for everyone.)

The Centre for Christian Studies also has a great recorded “how to” workshop (and a hilarious video that may sound just a bit familiar).

Important update:
Congregational annual meetings for 2021

A reminder of a notice sent late last year: The General Council Executive has suspended the requirement to hold congregational annual meetings until June, in light of the pandemic. You can still hold an online meeting as possible, but meetings are not required. Please click here for details. Further details about related matters like budgets and annual reports this will be shared later this month.

Information About Annual Meetings
and Annual Reports

The calendar now has us in 2021 and many questions have been forthcoming about Annual Reports related to 2020 and also Annual Meetings for that period. Many of our Congregations have remained closed for several weeks if not months. Committees have been less than active in many cases due to the disruption. Others have been extremely active in creating safe space and connections in your midst.

The General Council Executive back in April, 2020 made some amendments to The Manual (2019) related allowing for some matters that are deemed necessary.

Support for Ministry Personnel

These are stressful times when ministry personnel are attempting to fulfill the tasks associated with their role and calling and find safe and creative ways to keep congregations connected and spiritually nurtured. For many the time it takes to draw upon the gifts and skills of others to carry out some tasks and the learning curve around new technologies to enable meetings, study groups, worship and virtual coffee times to happen is significant. Ministry Personnel are encouraged amid all that is being required of them, to tend to self care and seek out the support of others if and when it might be helpful. The Employee and Family Assistance Plan of the United church of Canada offers several supports accessible online or by calling: 1-800-387-4765

HELP REQUESTED:
Sharing resources for re-engaging during COVID 19

During recent ZOOM meetings with leaders from Communities of Faith (September 15, 2020) and Ministry Personnel (September 22,2020) requests were made from some for samples of protocols developed by Communities of Faith for worship in building, celebration of baptism in person, celebration of communion in person, celebration of virtual communion on World wide Communion Sunday and plans for Sunday School or ministry with children and youth (both in person and virtual). If you are willing to share any of your resources please send them along to Cherry Abad and indicate whether you are willing to have a link posted on the Weekly News or prefer that they be available to others only upon request from Regional Council staff.

A reminder that there are links to resources of various types on both the Prairie to Pine Regional Council website and the General Council website. Another website with resources for ministry with children and families is Messy Church at Home: https://messychurch.org.uk/resources/messy-church-home-ideas

Our world seems smaller and more confined since COVID began. May these stories help widen it, and help us see where our prayers and actions from home can support those we may never meet in person, but with whom we are part of the Body of Christ.

Anti-racism update sent to all
communities of faith

As our church continues to lay out its commitments to becoming an anti-racist denomination, Adele Halliday reminds us there is a great deal of anti-racism work happening across the church, in many different places, and in many different ways. Do you have news to share about what is happening in your ministry? Please share news on the new United Church of Canada Anti-Racism Facebook Group; or, email anti-racism@united-church.ca  (Click here for the anti racism update sent to congregations in early February.)

Update on Bill C-15 and the United Church

Following discussions with the National Indigenous Council and the Elders Council, the United Church of Canada has not signed on to the ecumenical campaign supporting the federal Bill C-15 on the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Both the Council and the Elders cited the need for community discernment, as outlined in the Calls to the Church, before a decision could be taken. This is a reflection of our commitment to the Declaration, which we continue to support as the framework of reconciliation.

We also continue to encourage everyone to learn more about the UN Declaration.  It remains one of the many crucial calls to our church within the TRC Calls to Action. (You can download a free PDF of the text here and read KAIROS’ summary of the Declaration’s long journey.) See the Events listing in this newsletter for a related event from churches who have taken a position on Bill C-15, and watch for an upcoming event on diverse points of view on Bill C-15, hosted by KAIROS Prairies North.

The Knox Green Team (Brandon) Presents:
"Toward a Sustainable Food Chain -
Relearning our Role"

March 25 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. on Zoom

If you are anything like me, you usually think about eating as a way to nourish your body, as a good excuse to gather with friends and as a way to add some tasty pleasure to your life. What if the way we eat could also become a way of restoring our ecosystems and limiting climate change?

This webinar will offer information about emerging restorative agriculture systems and begin (or continue) to keep us thinking about how our choices as consumers can make a big difference in the natural systems on which we depend – and how they are either nurtured or degraded. The evening includes a presentation and discussion with Ryan Boyd, a local practitioner of restorative agriculture.

Please join us for some fascinating information and stimulating discussion on this important issue. To register please contact the Knox Office at knoxchurch@wcgwave.ca by 24 March.
