Saturday at the Roundhouse

                                               March 13th

     4070
The cab is nearly ready for sand blasting. There are a few more details to take care of.  The pallet of parts we removed is in the warehouse builing and we may want to retrieve it to verify window support locations and the the construction of the lower vent doors along with some other details  The  cab windows need some cleanng but they are essentially intact.  There is a wooden roof brace that needs to be evaluated for repair or replacement. It helps hold up the tongue and groove wood ceiling.  we should also take a look at the remaining wood ceiling materials.   Clearing weather will help us finalize the drawings for the tender.

The Tool Room

The tool room walls are washed and have dried out.  The debris was swept into piles and now are dry enough to shovel up.  We can move shelving units back in from the hallway and away from the cinder block walls and give those walls a fresh coat of paint. Our electrician has installed some LED ceiling lights and the room already looks brighter. The ceiling still needs work and at some point we will need to look at restoring the windows. It is a lot of work, but we have enough time to do the job well and give the area a clean, professional look.

The Drott
The engine/transmission assembly along with other parts were retrieved from the steel storage building. Many thanks to the volunteers who stepped up for this project.

Our efforts to maintain our Alco are ongoing.  Our aim is to obtain a blue card for the locomotive.
Last week the location of a water leak was determined and repaired, but has turned out to be still a problem.   If you have mechanical skills or interest, this is a great volunteer opportunity.

The America
Volunteers have been working during the past weeks to clean the car, but the car still has a list of chores that needs to get done. Just time and effort needed there. Spring is not that far off and the America is a candidate for excursion service that hopefully will resume this year.

Odds and Ends
Our lunch room has seen some major upgrades this past year, but still needs a new linoleum floor covering to help keep it clean. The material is on hand, we just need a volunteer with those skills.
Several of our volunteers have created a Midwest YouTube channel which is now up and running. Updates on 4070 are available on YouTube as well as archival videos.

From time to time, Midwest is contracted to do restoration work on privately owned rail cars and motive power.  If you have any mechanical, sheet metal or paint skills, volunteer help is always we

ANNUAL SAFETY CLASS.
Our annual safety class has been scheduled for March 27th. from 11:00-3:00.  Covid restrictions make a video presentation the most practical at this time. Steve Emling will conduct the class via Zoom. To participate your email address is required in order to receive an email link to Zoom.  You can do so by emailing the office or use the Signup Genius link on this page. Attendance is mandatory for anyone working on site.

 RPCA
The RPCA Committee is looking for volunteers to help out.  A lot of work has been done but there is still plenty of work to do. Contact the office or any Board member if you are interested in being part of this endeavor in any way.  Currently a video presentation is being prepared.

Limited Time Offer
We are still accepting donations in accordance with the past few weekends mailing that offers specially designed tee shirts and sweat shirts as a thank you gift to the donor. The offer will probably last until the end of March. These particular items may not be made available in the gift shop  when it opens, so reserve yours now.

The roundhouse is a safe and compliant place to work and interface with others. Masks are required. Common areas are continually being sanitized for our safety.  The governor is changing these guidelines on a weekly basis and we will reflect them as they are made.

All our volunteers and staff wish a speedy recovery to  volunteers Ed Palidar and Gordon Hartshue.  Hope to see you soon.
