AST Athlete Journal: Katrina van Soest

Hello Ski Racers from EuroLand! I hope your keeping healthy and enjoying the great Canadian outdoors during this odd winter!

Please allow me to introduce myself. My name is Katrina van Soest. I grew up in Vernon BC and started skiing with the Vernon Ski Club. Unfortunately, the club didn’t have a FIS Program so I joined the Vancouver FIS Ski Team for my first year of FIS. There were three other girls on the team that were tech focused but I was and will forever be more interested in speed skiing. A few friends suggested I approach Banff Alpine Racers (BAR) to find what I was looking for, so I did for my second year. My skiing would not be where it is today without the support I had (and still have) from BAR. I skied with BAR for four years and I can honestly say they are an amazing crew of people from teammates to coaching staff to some of the coolest parents anywhere. In my sixth year FIS I made the Alberta Ski Team. But due to COVID-19 I knew there wasn’t going to be many chances for racing in Canada this winter so I sought out other options. Which is when I was introduced to the International Ski Racing Academy. I was super fortunate to be accepted to be a part of both the Alberta Ski Team and International Ski Racing Academy (ISRA). Read more.

Panorama National Training Centre Receives $850k Grant

Some good news for ski racing in Canada.

Panorama resort announced this week an $850,000 funding boost to the alpine training centre to improve snowmaking and safety infrastructure.

The funding injection will allow Panorama – the site of the FIS Alpine World Junior Ski Championships in March 2022 – to continue to grow its capacity to host training and racing. Panorama has been home to many ski racing clubs around the world, particularly with its reliable early-season conditions and also in late spring, a typical low-volume period for ski resorts. Read more

Canada Finishing Strong

Heading into the last weekend of World Cup racing before the World Cup finals, the Canadian Ski Teams are in the start gates all across Europe from Sweden to Russia and down to Slovenia.

The women’s tech team will kick out of the start gate in Åre, SWE in the last slalom races before the World Cup finals in Lenzerheide.

Down in Kranjska Gora, SLO the men’s tech team is ready to finish on top with a giant slalom on Saturday and a slalom on Sunday. Trevor Philp finished 8th on this giant slalom course in 2019 and he looks to get back to the top-10 to close out the season. Trevor will be joined by Erik Read who has finished 19th and 16th here in 2019 and 2018.

Way over in Russia, the Canadian Ski Cross Team is looking to repeat as Nations Cup winners with a strong weekend. Marielle Thompson, who finished 1st on this course in 2017, looks to lead the team to the top of the podium once again. Reece Howden, who has already secured the ski cross Crystal Globe, wants to get back to the top of the podium. Read more
