Welcome to Our Newest Board Member

Photo of Linda NashWe are pleased to announce the appointment of a new member to the Board of Directors of the Cobourg Museum Foundation.  Linda Nash has been living in Cobourg since 2011, being particularly active with the Northumberland PROBUS Club.  She is also a volunteer with the National Air Force Museum in Trenton, along with her husband, Harry, who served on our 2014 Exhibit Team.
Linda will be taking on the position of Secretary of the Board, a most welcome addition!

Some Updates

The date for the 2021 Annual General Meeting of the Cobourg Museum Foundation has been set for Wednesday, April 21.  Once again it will be an online meeting via Zoom.  Further details will be forwarded to all members closer to that date.

Opening Day of the Sifton-Cook Heritage Centre - This normally takes place on the Saturday of the Victoria Day Weekend.  We are expecting that this will continue, though we recognize that changes due to the pandemic could still take place.  If all goes well, and with appropriate protocols in place, the gates will be opened at 10am on Saturday, May 22.

We were fortunate to have a student funded by a Canada Summer Jobs grant with us for a couple of months this winter.  Ryan Petre was particularly involved in the development of videos and the setting up of our online Book Store.  He completed his time with us at the end of February and we wish him all the best moving forward.

Historic Buildings Being Saved?

The Toronto Sun reported the other day that the major redevelopment of Port Hope’s old Nicholson File factory is still a go.  This is great news not just for Port Hope but for any community hoping to save its old buildings from unnecessary destruction.  One advantage the File Works has is that it was “overdesigned - built for multipurpose and to withstand a lot of abuse”.
Concept - Nicholson File
The location of the buildings, on the west side of the Ganaraska River, appears to be ideal for what Spotlight Development Inc. plans - multi-generational live-work condos with loft living quarters opening to rooftop terraces.

Concept - Dominion WheelMeanwhile, in Toronto, the Dominion Wheel and Foundry buildings, which the Province had begun to demolish in January, are still standing.  The Globe and Mail reports ongoing negotiations between Friends of the Foundry, City and Province over what might be saved.  Friends of the Foundry recently unveiled a “demonstration concept” which includes high-rise towers with a mix of community and retail space alongside restored versions of the foundry and machine shop buildings.

All this suggests that the desire to repurpose, rather than destroy, is flourishing both near and far, in both big city and small town.  And Cobourg?
