Dear Friends of Christ Church Bexleyheath,

Mothering Sunday.

This is a favourite hymn/worship song of our music group.

Think of a world without any flowers,
Think of a world without any trees,
Think of a sky without any sunshine,
Think of the air without any breeze.
We thank You, Lord,
for flowers and trees and sunshine,
We thank You, Lord,
and praise Your holy name.

This song came into my mind as I pondered Mothering Sunday amidst all that is happening in our world around. Mothering Sunday is not only a day of thanksgiving for all those who care and have cared for us, but also a springtime celebration, where flowers are given.  Sadly because of Covid we will not be able to give out our normal posy of daffodils. So instead is a beautiful photos of daffodils for you all to enjoy - virtual flowers this year.

I am sure that there will be many emotions for each of us this Mothering Sunday.  For me, it will be the first Mothering Sunday without mum being here.  Although it will not be possible to have extended family celebrations on this Mothering Sunday we can hopefully still send cards and chocolates, give mum breakfast in bed and a roast dinner.  We should also remember those who due to Covid and the lockdown have been apart from their mothers for a while.

It is important that we hold on to the fact that in all this, good and bad God cares, and God is. So, we can live our lives in the hope that he has set before us, enjoying his provision around us and trusting his promises.

It might be easy to think of a world at this time without some of the things which, up to now, have been part of it; but as that song goes it is harder to think of a world without some of the things which God provides, flowers and trees and sunshine, and that must cause us to give thanks.

The Collect for Mothering Sunday

God of compassion,

whose Son Jesus Christ, the child of Mary,

shared the life of a home in Nazareth,

and on the cross drew the whole human family to himself:

strengthen us in our daily living

that in joy and in sorrow

we may know the power of your presence

to bind together and to heal;

through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

The Collect for Fourth Sunday of Lent

Merciful Lord,

absolve your people from their offences,

that through your bountiful goodness

we may all be delivered from the chains of those sins

which by our frailty we have committed;

grant this, heavenly Father,

for Jesus Christ’s sake, our blessed Lord and Saviour,

who is alive and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and for ever.

BEATITUDES - by Tricia Dyer

Beatitudes, there are but eight
To help us through the pearly gate.
Blessings go to those who mourn
And to those of spirit poor.
The meek and those who strive for right,
Inheritance assured.
Mercy shown for mercy given,
The pure in heart will go to heaven.
Children of God are the makers of peace,
And blessed are the persecuted – last but not least.
Beatitudes – they give us guides
On how to live our daily lives.

Animals in Church

Did you know we have two Flying Pigs in our church?

Gazing around one day and looking about the church  I saw a stone ‘flying pig’ carved  at the top of one of the rear columns by a window on the north west side of the church.  Wondering what else we had carved into the stone work I saw that my pig had a relative on the south west side of the church.

Why have we got them?  What was the reasoning by the architect in putting them there or was the stone mason bored with time on his hands?  Looking further around our church I saw that we had some ‘flying birds’ carved on the columns on the north and south side of the church.

Our church was designed by a chap called William Knight who came from Nottingham in the 1800’s.  With nothing else to do I ‘googled’ the architect’s name and found that he had designed  other churches in and around Nottingham at roughly the same time as he designed our’s.

If you look at the websites of St John the Divine in a town called Bulwell, Nottingham and St Michaels Church in  Hoveringham, Nottingham  the photos of their churches both inside and out  look identical to Christ Church.  Wondering  if they had ‘flying pigs’ in their churches  I emailed  photos of our ‘pigs’  to their vicars asking if they had anything similar.  Regrettably they hadn’t. So why was our church singled out by William Knight for this honour?

Lincoln Cathedral has its ‘Imp’ with a story as to why he is there and we have or pigs and birds so what’s our story?
Answers on a very small postcard
Well gazing around the church while the sermon is being preached beats using your ipad!

Together with (4?) birds.
