Help in Times of Trouble
By Jonathan Riddle

There once was a father who had his own “prodigal son.” He was desperate to find a place that could help rehabilitate his son, Bill. Running out of options, the man wrote Dr. R.A. Torrey, president of Moody Bible Institute, and asked if his troubled son could be enrolled at Moody. Dr. Torrey denied the request, stating that Moody was a school of biblical learning, not a rehabilitation facility. After relentless appeals, Dr. Torrey approved the father’s request. The Moody president was willing to allow Bill to attend, as long as he was not a distraction to the learning environment for faculty and students.

At first Bill did not hold up his part of the bargain and Dr. Torrey thought that the experiment was hopeless. The boy’s problems seemed to be too complicated to overcome. He did, however obey the institute’s rules and vented his frustrations and concerns daily with Dr. Torrey. Bill listened, with increasing interest, to Torrey’s responses and teaching.

William Newell (Bill) became a well-respected and beloved professor at Moody Bible Institute several years after his initial enrollment. Bill wrote a poem to testify to the transforming, rehabilitating, saving power of the Lord Jesus. With words based on Romans 5:8 and a melody provided by Moody music professor, Dr. Daniel Towner, “At Calvary” was introduced in 1895. Bill Newell’s troubles led him to a place where he learned about the importance of Calvary’s grace.

This hymn story offers us a couple of important Christian lessons. First, we see the importance of biblical teaching, paired with discipleship. The second is that when life’s struggles discourage you, look to Calvary’s cross. Where can your burdened soul find liberty? At Calvary.

But God demonstrated His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. Romans 5:8

At Calvary—Lyrics

Years I spent in vanity and pride
Caring not my Lord was crucified
Knowing not it was for me He died on Calvary

By God's Word at last my sin I learned
Then I trembled at the law I'd spurned
Till my guilty soul imploring turned to Calvary

Now I've given to Jesus everything
Now I gladly own Him as my King
Now my raptured soul can only sing of Calvary

Oh the love that drew salvation's plan
Oh the grace that brought it down to man
Oh the mighty gulf that God did span at Calvary

(Refrain)Mercy there was great and grace was free
Pardon there was multiplied to me
There my burdened soul found liberty at Calvary
