Human Factors in Safety Critical Organisations

Over recent months both Simon Miles from Lyme Bay Rib Charter and Ian Winson from C2RIBS have attended an MAIB review into the fatal boat crash in Southampton last August as charter industry representatives.  The MAIB report is due for release fairly soon and we will send out the link to members.

The PCA have been monitoring and reviewing our present RIB safety document and are awaiting the report so we can review if changes to this guidance document are needed. Any revised document will be updated onto the website members downloads.

A consideration in all accidents in many industries is the Human Factor and how people responded to unfolding events.  Simon decided to invest in training for his company a few weeks ago and employed  Richard Hawker from https://airlandseatraining.com/human-factors#6db67b8a-8c11-499b-8b49-33dcc646c4ae

Both Ian Winson and Peter Matcham (commercial marine insurance and skipper) were invited and attended. The input was aimed at staff level.

As a benefit to it's members and in a proactive effort to stay ahead of the field in respect of ‘industry standards’ the PCA is looking at the demand and costings for Human Factor Training day for its members.

There is a likely fee to members to cover the costs and the PCA will look at whether we can support some of the training costs.  Initially if it went ahead we would aim for a South Coast venue for 15 people max as a start.

Simon reports-

Air Land Sea delivered Human Factors Training to all employees within our company at Lyme Bay RIB Charter.  We work in a ‘safety critical environment’ often operating at speed, or in challenging conditions whilst carrying members of the public.

The course was delivered to ALL members of staff from young deckhands to commercial skippers and took into account the range of experience within the room.
It raised both awareness and importance of decision making along with the potential errors and consequences that can result.  It prompted discussion of current practices, policies and procedures and highlighted areas for further improvement to help us maintain our safety record and remain vigilant to the human factors we face with the natural and human elements of our work.
This is training that will be repeated every year at the beginning of the season to switch staff onto the safety considerations they need to be aware of.
The whole team really enjoyed the training and would like to express their thanks to Air ,Land , Sea Training.

Thank you in advance and we will update you with the results and details shortly…
