Hello Open Data Week!

It’s Thursday, and we have over 30 open data events for you today. Join us at 9am until 10:30am to meet members of the NYC Mayor’s Office of Data Analytics and BetaNYC. Then, sit back and listen to lightning talks moderated by former NYC Deputy Analytics Officer Adrienne Schmoeker.

Curator Spotlight:

The Beeck Center

The Beeck Center is an experiential hub at Georgetown University. We believe that accelerating social change hinges on all sectors operating in concert. We take promising, impact-ripe efforts that fill ecosystem gaps and ready them for scale. Our experiential work always includes students as our long-game, to actively ready future leaders in the evolving impact space. Learn more here.

Open Data Week Curators:

  • Vandhana Ravi serves as the Program Associate for the Beeck Center’s data + digital projects. She is a graduate of Brown University where she studied sociology and children's poetry.
  • Kevin Parker is a fellow leading the Beeck Center's New Digital Service Teams project. A champion of public entrepreneurship and enhancing the citizen experience, Kevin most recently served as the State of North Dakota’s Chief Reinvention Officer.
  • Taylor Campbell serves as the Interim Director of Programs for the Beeck Center. She is a resourceful and relatable leader whose goal is to always support effective and inclusive public service.

A few highlights from yesterday's events:

  • We explored home values and ownership, revealing racial inequities during NYC Homeownership: Removing bias and creating equal opportunity for all with SAS and The Center for NYC Neighborhoods
  • We learned how to conduct “Access Checks” and the different ways data can be expressed for people with different kinds of abilities at Making NYC’s COVID-19 Data Accessible to the Disability Community, with the Mayors Office for People with Disabilities.
  • Two Sigma Data Clinic showed us how they examined Commuting during COVID-19: Using Open Data to Predict NYC Subway Crowds 
  • We learned how NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and Open Tech Strategies adopted new processes to create An Open Path Forward: a Technology Roadmap for a Health Data Team. Check out the report here.
  • We nerded out with fellow form lovers about Digitizing forms: creating better data and resident experiences with the Office of the NYC Chief Technology Officer

🎓 New to NYC Open Data? Join us at Intro to NYC Open Data classes with Civic Innovation Fellows, who have been training at BetaNYC this semester to become NYC Open Data Ambassadors. Today at 1pm with Special Guest Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer at 1pm and in SPANISH at 6pm. Tomorrow at 10am and at 2pm.

🖼 Visit the virtual Data x Design exhibition to explore amazing data artwork and meet the artists BTS.

🦊 Have you met our friends and allies at #MozFest? BetaNYC has joined the Cities Coalition for Digital Rights and UN Habitat to instigate a Digital Rights Helpdesk connecting officials and workers in city governments with advisors on ethical AI and digital rights. How would you use such a hotline? On March 17 join us to share your perspective as a potential end user OR advisor.

🏃 Go on a scavenger hunt with Measure for America all week at their DATA2GO.NYC Scavenger Hunt from Home!. They are sharing fun challenges on Twitter. The winner receives a $500 prize. Find out who it is THIS FRIDAY at 4PM!

In NYC, there are 🏞️ 1,700 parks, 🏀 557 basketball courts, 🤾🏾‍♀️ 546 handball courts, 🏊🏾 95 pools, 🏃🏽‍♀️ 34 running tracks,🪀 2,856 playgrounds, 🍖69 bbq areas, and 🐩 136 dog runs and off leash areas.
