New Content: Astragalus, Aspirin and Other NSAIDs, Hydration

Astragalus is one of the most commonly used herbs in traditional Chinese medicine. Research is showing very good combined effects with conventional approaches in treating breast, colorectal, esophageal, lung, stomach and other cancers. It also reduces some side effects of treatment and improves quality of life, is anti-inflammatory and supports immune function.

Aspirin and Other Non-steroidal Anti-inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDS), such as ibuprofen and celecoxib (Celebrex), are used to reduce inflammation and pain. Some NSAIDs may improve survival, make some cancer treatments more effective, and reduce the risk of cancer. However, safety is a concern, especially with long-term use.

These two new therapy reviews are test-driving a new rating system that we'd love your feedback on! We rate therapies on the evidence of effectiveness as well as their use by integrative oncology experts, safety, and affordability and ease of access. Send us a comment on any page with the new star ratings.

A new symptom page on Dehydration and Hydration explains that hydration is essential to all of us but especially important for cancer patients. Highlighting the why and how of hydration, this information is essential for those having surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy or other treatments.

In Memoriam: BCCT Research Associate Kozo Hattori

Our beloved colleague Kozo Hattori passed from life on March 1, 2021. Kozo served as a research associate for BCCT from 2019 to 2021, elevating our work and our team with his dedication, talents, passion and unflagging kindness and grace.

In 2015, Kozo was diagnosed with colorectal cancer, coming to see cancer as one of the greatest gifts he ever received. After two years of exploring a plethora of alternative treatments, Kozo took a more integrative approach and allowed surgeons to remove the tumor. Seeing medicine as one healing institution rather than the binaries of alternative vs. allopathic medicine helped open his mind, heart and body to healing. Kozo published a book on his healing journey titled The Healing Grace of Cancer.

Kozo’s cancer returned and metastasized in late 2019. His story on our website, Kozo Hattori, Grounding into Uncertainty, offers another view of his journey including the recurrence, his recent work with various healers, and his heartfelt perspective on his experiences.

Kozo died the way he wanted to die and on his own terms. His beautiful spirit is with us, as a part of our team, helping make BCCT what it is meant to be. We hold him in our hearts and extend our sincere condolences to all who knew him and loved him. He serves as inspiration to all of us.
