The "Ides of March" denarius commemorates the assassination of Julius Caesar in 44 BC. It bears the portrait of Brutus with the words BRUT IMP, "Brutus the general." The coins were later recalled by Mark Antony and Octavian after Brutus and Cassius' defeat at the Battle of Philippi.

Timely


  • Apply by today, March 15 for the 2021-22 Pembroke Seminar, “Color,” with professors Evelyn Lincoln and Leslie Bostrom. This seminar will explore how global histories of race, gender, and class are connected to structures of knowledge and power that are ordered by color. The seminar is open to faculty, undergraduate and graduate students and meets weekly. Learn more and apply at the Pembroke Center site
  • Join HIAA Professor Lindsay Caplan, on March 17 at noon, in the next installment of the Science and Technology Studies (STS) Colloquium Series. (see below for more)
Looking Ahead: Department and University Updates
 

  • Registration for the Summer 2021 term will be open for eligible undergraduate and graduate students from March 16 at noon to March 19 at 5 pm. Course listings are available on Courses @ Brown.
  • The deadline to file a concentration declaration, for undergraduate sophomores/students entering their fifth semester, is March 22 at 5 pm. Concentrations may be declared via ASK.

Happenings


  • Mar. 16 @ noon: Interested in museums, their relationship to history and representation, queerness, and/or being out in the workplace? Join the LGBTQ Center for “Queerness in the Museum,” a discussion with genderqueer and bisexual museum professional Margaret Middleton. Registration required
  • Mar. 16 @ 4:00 pm:Monumental Interventions” will showcase the work of four students from the Fall semester class, AFRI 080Q: Monuments, History, and Memory.  These projects intervene in monuments, rethink monumental space, and/or create new monuments. Sponsored by the Center for the Study of Slavery and Justice. Registration required.
  • Mar. 23 @ 5:30 pm: The Classics Department will host the 2021 Michael C.J. Putnam lecture. This year’s speaker, Princeton University Professor Denis Feeney, will analyze the Aeneid’s references to the Cretan labyrinth in a talk entitled, “In and Out of Virgil’s Labyrinths.” 
  • Mar. 24 @ 5 pm: Pittsburgh-based Vanessa German will give an artist talk, sponsored by the Department of Visual Art. As a citizen artist, German explores the power of art and love as transformative forces within the cultural ecosystems of communities and neighborhoods. Registration required.

 

Opportunities for Undergraduates  


  • Applications to the Royce Fellowship are due today, March 15, via UFunds. The program awards $4,000 to each undergraduate fellow as they carry out independent engaged research projects. Please note that fellows are required to be in residence at Brown for the Fall 2021 semester.
  • The Student Diversity Fellowship at the Society of Architectural Historians (SAH) invites applications from minority undergraduate students. This program will fully fund attendance at the Society’s signature annual conference and provide a one-year electronic membership to the SAH. Applications are due March 17.  
  • Rising seniors are invited to apply for a summer internship at Sotheby’s, the internationally recognized firm of fine art auctioneers based in New York. This onsite program will run from June 7 - August 13, 2021, and will offer placement in a variety of departments. Application deadline is March 26.

Opportunities for Graduate Students 


  • Wondering how to get your journal articles, books, and op-eds published? On March 17 at 10 am, the Center for the Study of Race and Ethnicity in America (CSREA) will hold a workshop on publishing for graduating students whose work centers race and ethnicity. Learn about the rest of the Center’s professional development programming and register at the CSREA site.
  • Join the Graduate Student Council (GSC) for a Town Hall open to all graduate students, faculty, staff, and alumni at Brown on Wednesday, March 17, 2021 from 4:00-5:30pm. Registration information.
  • Imagining the Atmospheric Invisible: Interdisciplinary Visualizations of Air will explore our understanding of air as a cultural artifact, scientific object, or artistic medium. This symposium is hosted by the Williams Graduate Program in the History of Art at the Clark Art Institute and will include pre-recorded lectures for asynchronous viewing, as well as two live Zoom panels on April 10-11.   • The Yale University Art Gallery is accepting applications for two postgraduate fellowships. Applications for the Florence B. Selden Fellowship in Prints and Drawings are due April 2, and applications for the Cullman-Payson Fellowship in Academic Affairs and Outreach are due April 19. More information.
  • The GIS Institute is accepting applications for its Summer 2021 GIS Institute. The Institute provides participants the opportunity to build and apply GIS and spatial analysis skills that directly translate to individual research projects, such as dissertations. Applications are due April 4.

Reflections on art, science, technology and society


HIAA Professor Lindsay Caplan will be talking with English Professor, Ada Smailbegovic, March 17 at noon on Zoom, about art, poetry, science, technology and society. The event is sponsored by Science, Technology and Society (STS) Colloquium Series at Brown that looks through an interdisciplinary lens at how science operates within society. Speakers in the series come together from a range of humanities and scientific disciplines to analyze historical case studies, observe contemporary scientists at work, examine art and other representations of scientific ideas, and study the infrastructure of scientific institutions. As part of the conversation, Professor Caplan will speak briefly about the work of contemporary Slovenian artist Tobias Putrih.
