Dear Centennial Families,

We hope you enjoyed the snow these past few days! Thanks for supporting our awesome kids with a return to a traditional snow day, as well as our remote day.  This school year we have had a lot of practice with constant change, and that we can do it all, together!

We’d like to announce an exciting change for after spring break. Because all of our teachers have received an opportunity to be vaccinated and will be fully inoculated after break, adult cohorting guidelines can change. Students must remain in their cohorts when inside, but there are no limits on the number of adults that can support cohorts. This means that all students in our building will have in-person enrichments! Classes will be taught inside and outside and may have a few remote days to finish up a remote unit, but we can’t wait for kids to get more facetime with our awesome enrichment team soon. The updated health guidelines also allow for us to mix crews for outdoor recess, so we’re excited to mix up recess groups so that kids get to make new friends. In addition, we’re thinking creatively about how we might use these new guidelines to host a students-only field day in May, and perhaps a socially-distanced 5th grade continuation. Stay tuned!

Last, our next round of family/community surveys are open from now until March 26thClick here to take the survey! This is an optional and confidential survey that asks questions related to each of the district’s crisis priorities of health and safety, social-emotional support, and accelerated learning -- and will include questions to inform our search for DPS’ next superintendent.

Thanks all, have a great last week before Spring Break!

Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS)
If you are a family with students in 3rd-5th grade please make sure that you read recent information shared with your crews about the upcoming Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) assessments.  As of now, school districts are still required to administer the CMAS assessments and all test administration must be done in person.  Letters shared with 3rd-5th grade crews speak in more detail about the testing dates, and what steps families need to take should they wish to opt their student out of CMAS testing this year.  Because of the pandemic there is NO penalty to students or schools if students are opted out of the assessments.  In a ’normal’ year the school would receive a 0 score for students who don't take the assessment, but this ‘penalty’ has been waived this year.  If you did not receive the recent 3rd-5th grade CMAS communication please reach out to your teacher.  Teachers can answer questions as well, OR you can email Laura or Emily directly.

Dear Centennial Families,
During this challenging time, our teachers and students need more help than ever. No matter what school looks like, Box Tops for Education is a fast and easy way for you to help out from home. The Box Tops program has been around for over 20 years, and it really works. In fact, Box Tops for Education has helped give almost a billion dollars to schools since 1996. In 2019, the program evolved to become digital so that you can earn for your school with just the touch of a button.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Buy participating products and use the Box Tops mobile app to scan your store receipt. The app identifies eligible products and automatically adds Box Tops to your school's earnings online. Even if you’re shopping online or doing grocery pickup, you can still submit your e-receipts and earn Box Tops. Twice a year, our school gets a check! Your earnings may seem small, but they really do add up. The more people that participate, the bigger the impact we can make. So let's give our teachers the support they need and help give more kids the opportunity to dream. Little by little, we can help make a big difference.

DON'T HAVE THE APP YET?

 Updates from the Science Lab!

Science = community.   As scientists, it's essential that we learn from each other in our Centennial crew and the greater science community.  Please check out the Community page of my science lab website to see how we are connecting as a community. A big thank you to Mr. Carlos for showing the Centennial generator to the 4th and 5th graders as part of our energy conversions expedition. https://sites.google.com/dpsk12.net/centennialsciencelab/community?authuser=0

Looking for more ways to get involved in science? There are numerous "Citizen Science" programs that families can try together. Miss Michelle's current favorite is through Merlin, a bird identification app for your phone.  Check it out here: https://sites.google.com/dpsk12.net/caselscienceexpeditions/k-1/birds?authuser=1
