TOP TIPS TO DEVELOP A LOVE FOR READING

Families often ask us how they can help their child to develop a love for reading. I have been working together with The Open University and the UKLA  over the past couple of years to really promote reading for pleasure here at Mayflower. Two years ago, I attended some training in Sheffield which was organised by Professor Teresa Cremin. Teresa inspired me so much, that I raced home to Plymouth to set about working together with the reading team to find new ways of inspiring our children at Mayflower, to have a love for reading.
A few weeks ago, I met up with Teresa (remotely of course) to have a chat about reading for pleasure and how we (families and school) can help our children with their reading, in these unusual times. Have a watch of our chat, it's not too long- just a snap shot to get us started...

WORLD BOOK DAY- BOOKS ARRIVING SOON

I was thrilled to receive an email from WHSmith recently. They asked if they could work together with us to ensure that every child at Mayflower receives a book from the World Book Day vouchers. Retailers have extended the opportunity to use the vouchers in store, but only whilst stocks last. I was a little anxious that this would mean that some of our children would miss the chance to get the £1 book from the vouchers. However, working with WHSmith means that every child at Mayflower will be guaranteed a book. Have a look below at the books that are available this year. They all look fantastic. I will pass the books to the class teachers as soon as they arrive, so look out for your child with a new book to keep!

MAYFLOWER READING PADLETS
CLICK HERE TO ACCESS MCA CHILDREN'S PADLET
Are you looking for a new book for your child to read? If so, have a look at the recommendations below. They are all written by children across the classes at Mayflower. The children love to share their reviews and opinions on this online platform. It is really easy to add a review. Click on the pink cross at the bottom right when you access the website, and off you go. Be careful though- it is addictive. Once you start, you don't want to stop!
We also have two more Padlets. One is for parents/carers/staff to add book recommendations for what they are reading. The other is for Professional Development. You are welcome to have a look at all three of our Padlets and add comments/reviews if you would like to join in with the fun. Together We Can.

You can access the Padlets here:

Step up

ATTENDANCE for all is a must. Pupils who are on time and are fully engaged, make more progress. They go on to have better life choices. Step up to the mark.
BUG CLUB- MAYFLOWER ONLINE READING SCHEME

Bug Club is our Online Reading Scheme. Your child has been allocated books by their class teacher, suited to their individual interests and reading confidence. There are hundreds of books available for your child. They are all FREE and ready to be read!
We do expect all children to be reading at least 5 x per week for a minimum of 15 minutes per day. Bug Club is a great way to encourage your child to read.
Click on the image for a short video that I have made, explaining how you access Bug Club.

FRIDAY FIRESIDE READ CONTINUES!
I have asked the children whether they would like the Friday Fireside Reads to continue, now that we are all back at school. The answer was a very loud YES! So, we will be continuing with our Friday Fireside Read, this evening at 6.30-7pm. Please feel free to come along (remotely!) with your child for this informal reading group. It is a wonderful half an hour. The children are becoming more and more confident at reading. I read a short story to the children and then it's over to the children! Some choose to talk about what they are reading, some choose to read, some choose to listen. We celebrate our shared love and enjoyment of reading. Do encourage your child to join us. All are welcome. The meeting can be accessed through your child's TEAMS calendar. This evening, 6.30-7pm. See you there!
Focus

ATTENTION and focus are key learning behaviours that pupils are taught. Pupils learn how to organise their ideas, accelerate progress and achieve the highest standards.

SUBTITLES CAN HELP IMPROVE READING...
CLICK HERE TO WATCH HOW SUBTITLES CAN HELP LEARNING TO READ
A really quick way to improve your child's reading has just been released... through turning on the subtitles when you watch television!
Click on the image below and watch Stephen Fry explain more in this very short film clip.
Turn on the subtitles, give it a try and let us know how your child responds. We are always interested in new ways to support reading.
Empower

DEVELOPING the talents and interests of our pupils and their families sits at the heart of our ‘Together we can…’ ethos. Empowerment fuels improvement for all.
EXTRACTS TO TEMPT YOU...
Have you heard of the website www.authorfy.com ? You can access many videos of authors reading their books, writing workshops, poetry readings and book extracts. This week, I would like to introduce to the book called A Song of Gladness by Michael Morpurgo and Emily Gravett. This is just a snippet of the book, which I have found on www.authorfy.com, but I thought that you may enjoy it...

Remote Learning has its benefits, but long days of screen time is not one of them. So what do we do to counter this?

This brilliant video highlights and shares the importance of screen breaks in order to balance the day. Class Teachers have very carefully managed your remote timetables to ensure you have plenty of opportunities for rest, fresh air and exercise. It is very important that you take full advantage of these breaks to stand up and stretch. Thank you very much to Mr White for making such a fantastic and useful film.
