Networking matters more for women in academe - Inside Higher Ed

Looking for new employment can be especially daunting these days, but Brandy L. Simula recommends four practices that can help you come out ahead. - Inside Higher Ed - "Developing practices to manage your job search strategically, building a job-search support network, planning for how you’ll respond to requests for information about your job search and drawing on effective self-care strategies can help job seekers flourish even in today’s challenging job market."

Create a postcard for display at the Valley Library: Postcards to Campus project promotes creativity and community - "OSU community members are encouraged to share art, writings and sentiments on their postcards that range from personal to OSU-specific. Many of those submitted so far have reflected people’s pandemic experiences and what they miss about being on campus."

Should the COVID-19 pandemic be addressed in doctoral writing? And if so, how? - Doctoral Writing SIG - "Is the thesis a place where the COVID-19 pandemic should be present?"

Aomawa Shields describes how she found her voice to speak the truth about systemic exclusionary and racist attitudes -- and the importance of other professors doing so, as well. - Inside Higher Ed - "Indeed, several months ago, in one of my first faculty meetings since becoming tenured, I spoke up in ways I never have before in that environment."

Defining Behaviors - OSU GEMM Blog - "Talking through what that work would look like reminded me that we cannot answer every question and trying to assess all exciting side projects can cause us to lose focus on the main questions."

Meet superspreader Chegg, which has become the most valuable edtech company in America by connecting college students to test answers on demand. - The Atlantic - ""It’s called "chegging."" College students everywhere know what it means. "If I run out of time or I’m having problems on homework or an online quiz," says Matt, a 19-year-old sophomore at Arizona State, "I can chegg it.""

Generalized Additive Models in R: A free interactive course - Noam Ross

What do professors do during a writing session? - Inside Higher Ed - "The underlying assumption is that writing will start flowing once you sit down. We’ve all heard variations of this advice: "Just start writing." "Get your butt in the chair and you’ll write." "Just write one sentence/750 words/freewrite." But such pieces of advice don’t answer the question of what professors actually do during writing time, so the question persists."
