MTA Map Shows Vaccination Sites
COVID-19 vaccination sites have been added to New York City’s Metropolitan Transportation Authority’s (MTA) digital subway map in an effort to help riders find the most efficient routes to their inoculation site. The new digital map launched in October 2020, provides real-time updates of train locations. Now, the map features a syringe icon to represent site locations. Each icon contains information about the center and which type of vaccines are administered there. MTA recently announced plans to enhance bus service for public housing residents in Brooklyn and Queens to state vaccination centers.

European Union
LGBT Freedom Zone Declared
This week the European Parliament declared the European Union a "freedom zone" for LGBT people, in response to recent discriminatory policies passed in Poland and Hungary. In recent years, as many as 100 municipalities in Poland, comprising about a third of the country, have established "LGBT-free zones," in order to ban equality marches and other LGBT events. In Hungary, leadership has signaled an intention to amend the constitution to prevent legislation advancing LGBT liberties. The EU Parliament's declaration is largely symbolic and encourages governments to promote equality and civil liberties for all citizens. The resolution acknowledged discrimination based on sexual orientation remains a problem across the EU and cited increased use of hate speech by elected authorities including Polish President Andrzej Duda.

Indonesia
Sinabung Volcano
Indonesia’s Sinabung volcano, on Sumatra Island erupted yesterday. Clouds of smoke and ash were blown over 1.8 miles (3 km) to the Northeast and were ejected as high as 3,280 feet (1,000 m) into the air. Indonesia’s Volcanology and Geologic Mitigation Center has since advised residents to stay at least 5km (3.1 miles) away from the volcano’s mouth. Mount Sinabung has been rumbling for the past year, causing authorities to monitor its activity very closely. It is among 120 active volcanoes in Indonesia. No casualties have thus far been reported.

Yesterday's Answer
Q: At 430 feet (130 m) above sea level, where can you find a memorial altar placed at the tip of a volcanic plug made of dolerite, the remnant of a volcano believed to have gone extinct millions of years ago?

A: The Scottish National War Memorial
The Scottish National War Memorial is a chapel inside Edinburgh Castle, which itself is situated on Castle Rock, a volcanic plug made of dolerite, in the heart of Edinburgh. A peak of the rock emerges through the floor of the chapel and the altar is placed directly on the top of it. The chapel was completed in 1927 to  memorialize Scotland's dead from World War One, and the rolls are updated with all Scottish casualties of subsequent conflicts.
