From the Principal…

Congratulations to everyone on a fantastic start to the school year! Our staff and students blitzed the face masks during the first week back at school and we're really proud of them.

Our new business plan for 2021 to 2024 is nearly ready for publication. This plan is responsive to both the feedback we gain from parents, staff and students as well as our results overall. Along with our vision of "fostering an optimistic future by empowering our college community to succeed" we have a new tagline of "We believe, we empower, we succeed." The 'we' in this represents the work that we as a community put in to put our children/students in the best position possible for the future. The JTC Board will soon be ratifying the content of the business plan. The AGM will be held on Tuesday 23 March 4:30pm, followed by a general meeting.

To the parents who came to the P&C meeting this week, I thank you. This is a great way to work with us to provide the best opportunities for our kids. At the next meeting, Tuesday 27 April, the P&C will be making decisions on how to allocated $75,000 towards projects in the school. We would love to see more parents involved in assisting to make these important decisions!

Our PBS (Positive Behaviour Support) team has been hard at work with a new initiative to enable students to make an impact on the learning environment within their classes. Our classes have captains and will regularly review the classroom culture and provide feedback to their teachers. From this, goals will be set for each class to achieve. An example of a goal might be, that interruptions due to students calling out are reduced. The class will discuss strategies on how to achieve this. The idea behind this initiative is to give our students the opportunity to have an impact on what happens in their classes. We look forward to seeing how this goes.

Year 7 Camp to Fairbridge

Written by Student Michael Nowak (Year 7/SA)

All that laughter and noise; yes, that is the year 7s getting ready for the Fairbridge camp that will last two days. 101 people attended, 92 students and 9 teachers. All the numbers added up, so Mr Bell gave the “all good” sign, and we’re off!

When the buses arrive at Fairbridge Village, all our bags are placed in the cafeteria. Teachers settle everyone down and then we are placed into six groups with around 15-16 people each. Each teacher was staying with one group; Ms. Canavan, Mr. Sidi, Mr. Bell, Ms. Byrne, Mrs. Lawrence and Ms. Davidson. Other teachers were running activities and supervising; Mr. Simpson, Mr. Whetters and Mrs. Hill.

These different teachers supervised all of our activities. Archery – which was pretty fun, but it took some getting used to! – then there were two sets of orienteering; one looking for landmarks around Fairbridge and one using a compass to find letters. We got to do zip-lining which was scary, but amazing at the same time. When we got to abseiling, only a few people really joined in, but when you got down, you felt brave. The low ropes course was fun, but stressful when you had to be blind-folded. The pool, by far, had to be the best activity, you could chill out and cool off at the same time. Everybody was puffed out due to the boiling hot weather, we had to drink litres of water!

Overall, the best part had to be chilling and relaxing in the pool. You had the chance to hide away from the hot sun.

Thank you to the teachers for making a camp this early in the year.

The year seven coordinator Hayley Hill praised the wonderful behavior and resilience the students displayed while on the camp.

"The enthusiasm the students gave to complete tasks and overcome their fear of heights as well as push through in the heat wave while on camp was to be commended."

The students enjoyed a swim at the Fairbridge pool after a long day in the sun, conquering their fears and participating in all of the outdoor activities.

TECHNOLOGIES NEWS

Last year John Tonkin College for the first time hosted the annual Southern Corridor Bottle Rocket competition.  This is an open invitation to all high schools located in a strip from Halls Head College in the south up to Atwell College going north.

John Tonkin College had 5 representatives from the school on the day and were up against two other teams from Comet Bay College and Coastal Lakes College.

The competition aims to test student’s ability to design and then make a Water Bottle Rocket out of a regular 2 litre carbonated bottle within 2 hours.

The students must design and construct the fins, sleeve, and cone of the rocket using materials provided on the day.  Once constructed the rocket is pressurised to 65psi and fired on the oval. The rocket that travels the furthest is deemed the winner.  Students also had the chance to modify their rockets after an initial flight for a second attempt.

Photo on Left: Congratulations to JTC student Georgia Ingram who came first with her rocket travelling a distance of 130 metres.

Photo on Right: Congratulations to JTC student Zara Simpson who came second with her rocket travelling a distance of 115 metres.

Other photos include the process of building the rockets.

  Art News

Recapping 2020 Art events JTC Art teacher Annette James described the above event "I AM ME."  JTC Art students were given the opportunity to participate in this event held at MPAC in December 2020.

"Another amazing experience was the exhibition called “I AM ME” presented by the Mandurah City Council. I was asked by Mark Ladbrow to collaborate with him on producing some images that would allow students to express who they are in a public space.

Three year 11 and Three 12 students were chosen to display their pieces at the MPAC over the summer. I am pleased to say they were very proud of their work and so was I. Each student was interviewed about who they are and what the image says about themselves, this was a profound experience for most of the students as they had to really consider what was great about them, something we all find difficult to do.

Mark formally thanked me for my help and expressed it would not have happened with out it and the support of JTC. The council has offered me the opportunity to use the MPAC space for free this year to run an exhibition of our student’s photography! This is very exciting as it is an amazing opportunity to be able to exhibit student work in a public forum."
